One possibility is that you have a PAL/NTSC mismatch. Your VCD may be PAL and your DVD player is expecting NTSC or vice-versa. Some DVD players can convert to whatever output the TV is expecting, but not all can do this. I would suggest trying to discover whether your VCD is PAL or NTSC and hopefully you know what your TV is expecting. If you live in the US or Canada, your TV should be expecting NTSC. You can download the free Teco bit rate viewer at www.tecoltd.com and examine your VCD with it. If your video is 352x280 it's PAL. If it's 352x240 it's NTSC. Solutions to this problem include making sure your DVD is set for the correct output (this is the output correct for your TV- NOT what the VCD is) or even re-encoding the VCD to the other format. www.vcdhelp.com has some suggestions on how to re-encode should you need to do it. Something other than a PAL/NTSC mismatch might be your problem, but this is only a guess.
