1.4X converters for 100-400mm lens f4 -5.6

Hi ShutterBugs,

I would just like to know anyone has try using 1.4X converters for super zooms like the 100-400mm range. Please do let me know how's the results. It is acceptable and sharp? Do forward me the pics you have taken. I am a weekend photographer who will enlarge photos up to 8R and is going for wildlife projects.

Please do not advise me on buying fixed lens and add a converter will be a better solution due to f-stops and lens quality. I do agree with it but I just want to know the alternative. Thank you.

James, I have the 100-400 and the 1.4 & 2.0 x converters. I would rate the lens a A- , with the 1.4x a B and with the 2x a C grade. I have taken many photos with all combinations and the 1.4 usually gives very acceptable results - IF the light is good I can get good results with the 2x using mirror lockup. You can see examples at http://www.pbase.com/dbehrens/galleries . Click on my photos from Keoladeo National Park; Bharatpur, India and the Siberian Cranes on page 2 I know were taken with the 2X.
