Bobby's War Chest, Mark II?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Apparently the NOTW today carries a story that BR will have a transfer kitty of £35m, plus what he can generate from transfers - IF we qualify for the CL.

They go on:

"Mentioned as potential signings are Frank De Boer from Barca on a Bosman, giving him somewhere near £3 million a season in wages. With Arsenal also apparently interested, it should be quite a battle if we are after his signature.

Also mentioned heavily over the last few weeks and included today is Titus Bramble, who is almost certain to leave the sinking ship that is the Tractor Boys, with Sheepshanks admitting that he will have to sell over £12 million worth of players to break even in the Nationwide".

Other names being mentioned are Muzzy Izzet and Robbie Savage who will probably be leaving Leicester this summer. The most bizarre link of the day is Titi Camara from West Ham's reserves. In addition, there are suggestions of us moving again for Trevor Sinclair should we decide to let Laurent Robert go.

I suspect that 99% of this is uninformed, idle press speculation, but it gets the summmer silly season off to an early start.

With the difference being that we are now buyers rather than just trying to work out where Dyer is going.

F. de Boer... yes please.

Exactly what we need IMO and hugely under-appreciated by the Catalans here.

Not a teenager but well capable of organising a defence. He doesn't seem to be too "spent" as they say in Spanish - as far as I know he's not regularly injured.

Must be all the steroids...

Cannavaro says he wants to leave Parma. Ok with me =)

De Boer and Stamm would be a canny combination in defence, tho of course, after Farcelino makes an heroic return themorraneet against Fulham, perhaps we could do without De Boer and have the ugliest centre pairing in the PL.

-- Anonymous, April 07, 2002

Cannavaro would be even better than De Boer IMO, as he has more pace.

De Boer has lost a lot of his pace and even he wouldn't deny that, although he's still a bloody good defender.

I don't rate either of Izzet or Savage, and don't believe Sinclair is good enough, as well as being nearly 30. The only position I would really expect us to buy older players is centre back, where the experience is invaluable.

Why would any aspiring premiership side want to sign Trevor Sinclair?....phoenix

-- Anonymous, April 07, 2002

I think we should avoid buying West Ham players simply because of Glenn Roeder, unless it's on a Bosman.

-- Anonymous, April 07, 2002

Sign De Boer on a free and Bridges for whatever he costs. Play Distin in the middle with De Boer and we won't need to worry about De Boers lack of pace. Also buy an experienced central midfielder to help 'put the foot on the ball' in crucial games especially European - look what McAllister achieved in his first season at Liverpool. And of course buy someone as cover for Bellamy - I wonder how JDT would fit into this current team?

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

I mean Wayne Bridge not Michael Bridges, don't think he would be so good at left back - we should also try and sign him before the world cup - remember how Phil Babbs value rocketed after USA '94.

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

Could maybe get Phil Babbs on the cheap now...

I wonder where they get a figure of £35m from? Seems extremely high to me - although if it's true and we can afford it then it's great news. Probably just a made up figure I suspect to fuel speculation. If so it's extremely poor to pass it off as news.

Wasn't there a story at the end of last year that we were going to have 100 million to spend over the next 3 years? We have spent 21 million since the end of last season so that figure may be correct.

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

The fax toner was low - it should have read £3.5m.

We do not want Izzet or Savage, neither Camara or Sinclair thank you. I don't want FdB either.

All the de Boers are miserable gits and we've had enough of them. In fact most of our foreign players, Dabs excepted, have been miserable gits who haven't really wanted to play for us for long, Robert being just the latest in the line. I've gone off them all together. Let's Buy British.

I reckon £35M is probably there or thereabouts. If we do spend that amount, we would have to make the Champions League next year too and the pressure might be too much for a young side. Personally I hope we leave some of the money in the kitty and don't go too mad with the chequebook this summer.

Buying in players is exactly what we need to do. I agree we shouldn't go mad and buy unknown players for millions or try out other unknowns (see Fumaca) but it is essential that the current squad be trimmed and new players be bought if we are to succeed in improving on this year. It has been a year beyond our expectations, but we must not stand still like the Makems did. If we have to spend the alleged £35M to do this then go for it.

Logann,

would the "fact" that all foreign players haven't really wanted to play for the Toon have anything to do with fans like you who seem to think that all foreign players are miserable gits, to whom no quarter should be given?

Just a thought.

Ever the spoil-sport, but imho NUFC need to tread very carefully financially. I simply don't believe they can afford to spend another £35m, plus the wages required to support several additional top-class acquisitions.

The club is undoubtedly making progress, and the name of the game should be to continue making progress.

The Sky contract negotiations get under way during next season, and any Club who feels it will result in "more of the same" is in cloud cuckoo-land. Accordingly, we should resist "going for broke" and gambling everything on one CL campaign (assuming, of course, we qualify!) - because it just could prove to be a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Agree, Clarky. We definitely need to bring in new players, but not spend 35mil just because we can. I think YBR will spend wisely and try to bring in players who will fit into the team, not just players with famous names.

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

I'll second that Clarky. With a manager like Bobby Robson hopefully being careful with what we spend won't mean we start to play like Sunderland. When I say careful, we should still have a very decent amount to spend, but in the current market it's worth waiting and biding our time for players we really want that are keen to play for us.

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

....the really nice thing is that in BR we have a Manager we can trust to do take a sensible course course of action.

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

Is that what he tells himself just before the infamous triple substitution? ;-)

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

You do me wrong Mika. I didn't mean to suggest all foreign players are miserable gits just the de Boers and the ones we end up with. Strangely enough most of them seem to be French (Ginola, Goma, Rober

It's Wor Bobby's Chest I'll be more concerned about if it keeps on like this...

-- Anonymous, April 08, 2002

In what way is Robert a miserable git Logan? I really think that is unfair to say. You have to accept some diffrencies in the players personalities. Ya sure he didnt work his ass off in a game and got the deserved critisism. The intresting is the way he reacted to it. Did he play even worse the next game? Did blame the other players? Did he blame the manager? Did he say or do anything negative? No, he didnt. He did one of his best matches in B&W and worked like hell all match. That was what I wanted to see and then I realised we dont really need to worry about him. I think he will be extremly good next season.

What a great tactic, can someone look back to the papers coming out at the end of last season anouncing the transfer funds available to the managers of Arsenal, Manure, Chelsea, Liverpool and if they were conditional of anything?
