Camera starts to work / make noises when older sigma lens is attached!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

My sister owns an eos 500 and several zooms; with one there is a problem: the camera starts to work / make noises when an older sigma zoom lens is attached! it even does that when the camera is off! with other ef /ef-compatible lenses this problem does not accur; what is wrong? must the lens be checked? Thanx, Robert Stoner

There's two distinct possibilities with this.

1) The lens is broken. Given the reliability track record of Sigma lenses, this is quite possible.

2) The lens is not compatible with the camera. What are the other lenses you're using? Canon lenses are compatible, and Tamron should be ok, but many other makes lenses are incompatible (esp older lenses) with newer canon bodies.

Look at the question and debate on the sigma 100-300ex question for your answer.
