How can I run a VCD on WinXP ..

Hi I tryed to run a vcd (.dat file) using the windows XP media player bit it gives me the reeoe massege : incorrect finction .. and when I try to run it by using Xing it gives me a long error massege .. problem with handling level and MCI device .. something like that Befor i ve install the WinXP..I were able to run the VCD in any player ..

and thats why I think that the problem is with the XP .. not with computer ..

any solutions or suggestions..

Yeh go on

FIRST CUT AND PASTE TEH FILE UR TRYING TO VIEW...INTO C:/

THEN

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

TYPE IN THE FOLLOWING

-------------------------- = cd..

-------------------------- = cd..

DIR

whatever the name of the file was ...

eg.

RENAME GONEIN60SECONDS.DAT GONEIN60SECONDS.MPG

NOW HOPEFULL GO BACK INTO C:/ IT SHOULD WORK!

I could not cop or cut it .. it says invalid MS-DOS function .. or something like that ...

i tried to copy it through the windows . if u want mw to copu it through the command promote .. so pleas give me the comand ..

You dont have to use command prompt. I have used xp its not complicated making the file and mpg is right but not through command prompt. Just put the file on your c: drive and right click go to "rename" delete the .dat and put .mpg then hit ok then ittlll ask if your sure you want to change the file name say yes and then it will be .mpg try to paly then. if that doesnt work try reburning with the file extenstion .mpg through nero.

If you have a DVD-ROM drive all you need is a software DVD playre like PowerDVD. Then play it as you would a DVD movie.

well ... i have read all of the above .. and i might try the ideas giving .. coz i have been facin the same thing .. hell i even tried to update my media player which came with xp to ver 9 and after 2hours of crap downloading in dail up .. nothing happend .. it still cant play that .dat file .. though i got some other dat files but they all were working fine with me .. but this file aint working .. and tried at my other pc got os win98 and its working gr8!!!

There is some misinformation here. WinXP with PowerDVD will not play (S)VCDs that play fine with mplayer/FreeBSD. In fact, if someone can give me proof that VCDs are viewable in any way under WinXP, I'll be stupified, but I don't think so...
