I havve just acquired a Kalimar Six/Sixty camera without the manual. I am having trouble because ofttimes there is no image in the viewfinder-usually and I cannot figure out if it is me or the camera. I only work in medium format (Rolleiflex and Mamiya). Any help out there????Please????? Edie

Is this a single-lens reflex? This sounds like it could be a mirror issue. You do,of course, have the lens cap off?

Yes it is a SLR and I do have the lens cap off. Thanks for any help!!! Edie

I don't think the Kalimar has an instant return mirror. As with many older SLRs, you must wind the film on to get the mirror down into the viewing position.

The Kalimar Six-Sixty DOES have an instant return mirror; in fact, it was one of the very first medium format cameras with this feature. The mirror mechanism is a bit delicate, though, and sensitive to dirt and cold temperatures, and it is possible for the mirror to hang in the up position after the shutter fires. Sometimes the mirror can be made to drop by removing the lens and snapping the spring-loaded lever on the left wall (your left as you look in) of the mirror box a few times. I have done a fairly complete strip-down and rebuild of the Kalimar and have some notes and sketches if needed.... you may have a hard time finding a commercial repairman interested in fixing it for less than you paid for the camera. I also have an article on the Kalimar here: http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-36.html

Actually, I just noticed that I have some of the repair sketches posted on my site as well. They're located at:
