Where to buy a 50mm F2 Summicron in UK

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I have recently rejoined the Leica flock with an ageing M4P after a 10 year break and initially bought a 50 F2.8 Elmar of 1960 vintage as my primary lens. I have been disappointed with initial results (colour print)in that ,although sharp enough, the lens has a tendency to soften when photographing highlights and to be generally lower in contrast than I am used to. The colour is soft as a result also. It has prompted me to look for a 50F2 summicron instead, either late last type or new. Interestingly all new stock seems to be £550 ukp from any dealer in the UK for a black version. I read the posting about MRP for Leica dealers in the archive but there must be a cheaper way of buying new in the UK with the same level of risk - I dont mind going grey. The price differential in buying s/h is not attractive enough to make this route an obvious solution.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed ?

Thanks

Dave

David, like 35 F2's, late model 50 Summicrons are snapped up very quickly - have you scanned AP? Or why not a new Voigtlander Nokton, easily the equal of any Leica 50 and new at £240! Personally I would hold on for the soon to be released Voigtlander 50 F2.5 Color Skopar - it may just become the best value 50 available.

Hi Dave,

I have a Mint condition M6 TTl .85 and a recent 50mm Summicron also in mint condition, both black. A few days ago I posted them on this site for $1,900, including the UV filter, so far no one has picked them up. Is it possible that you would be interested in a "Like New" M6 as well. If you are, let me know. You would have to pick up the insurance and Fedex freight charges, but I would be willing to sell them to you in the UK. Good Luck Dave, in your quest!
