Albatros Island

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

My Great Grandfather was stationed at Albatros Island, San Francisco during the Civil War(1861 - 1865). I can't find any information on Albatros Island. Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

The name you have may be garbled: Alcatraz Island was originally called "Isla de los Alcatraces" (Island of the Pelicans).

There is an Albatross Island in Baja, California and one in Tasmania.

During the 1850s and '60s Alcatraz was known variously as "Alcatrazos", "Alcatros", "Alcatrus" and several other variants of its actual Spanish name of Alcatraces. I've done a bit of resarch on the military history of Alcatraz and if you can post any information about your relative's unit (e.g., 1st California Volunteers) I may be able to provide some additional info.
