Filter Use

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I know there are differences of opinion regarding the use of UV filters. Some of you do not use them; others of you do. Some leave the UV filter attached to the lens at all times for protection; others remove it when taking shots. I choose to leave the UV on the lens at all times. My question is for those who leave the lens attached at all times, but wish to use a colored lens for a particular situation: Do you remove the UV filter and attach the colored filter directly to the lens, or do you mount the colored filter to the UV filter? Thanks.

I'm the most unrepentant UV filter user here, but I'd take off the UV before I put another hunk of glass onto the stack.

If I can get away with it (read: avoid vignetting) I just slap the color filter (usually a CC30M magenta) over the UV. What can I say, I'm lazy.

Before B+W MRC UV filters I always took the UV off before using another type of filter. With the MRC's I leave them on, unless the additional filter will cause vignetting.

Agree with Jay. MRC makes all the difference.

I don't use UV's on Leitz lenses, but if I did, I'd remove one filter before installing another. Two stacked filters add four surfaces and two air spaces between that lovely Leitz glass and your image. Opinions vary, of course.
