The house symbolizes, the fall of the family lineage and the end to the incestuous relationship between Roderick and Madaline. He wanted it to end, he knew what was going on in the family was wrong. The story tells us that when he attempts to murder her, with him putting his sister in the coffin. Freud would say that he's trying to bury his feelings about the relationship. What do you think about that?
