Viewfinder Silvering

I have an M-6 and the front of the viewfinder shows a stripe of silvering on the bottom of the window. Is this to keep light out to make the diodes easier to see? What is then the purpose of the top silvering on the TTL?

It does nothing.. is cosmetic.

This silver stripe was one of the differences between the classic and the ttl.

To clarify - the bottom silvering IS functional, in the way you think, and the top silvering, as Jason sez, is cosmetic - it just fills space created by the 2mm addition in height to the top plate in the TTL.
