Automated compost pile turner

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I posted this over on CS, but thought ya'll might find it of interest also. I designed an attachment for my compost pile so that I can turn a six to eight foot tall pile and have it finished in less than 10 minutes by myself.

I built two chicken wire mesh screens with sling lines and rings on the ends. I put the pile under a tree and hung two block and tackles.

One screen lays on the ground with the compost on it, the other holds the raincover tarp down on the top of the bin.

To turn the load, I remove the cover screen and tarp. Then hoist the load up 10 feet with the B&Ts , using slip hitches to the sling rings. Slide the cover screen into the bin and pull one of the slip hitches to drop mix the load.

Put the rain tarp and cross timbers in place and lower the suspended rack down to pin the tarp. Tie the B&T lines off to keep them from tangling. Sweep up any spill and close the bin.

In the fall, uncover the bin to catch the leaves off the tree . Am I lazy or what :>)
