Documentary Workshop

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Well folks I just registered for my first weekend photography workshop ever! I’ve been shopping around for the past few years and have settled on the Woodstock Center of Photography in upstate New York. Though they offer many workshops, I found one offered by Chris Rainier a noted documentary photographer who specializes in Indigenous cultural issues. This is the type of work I have done for some time myself. Rainier has published several famous books, exhibited internationally etc… I plan to bring my M3 along for the ride so with luck I’ll learn a few things I can use in the field. Question! Has anyone taken a workshop with Chris Rainier? Or has anyone taken a photography workshop lately? Was it worth it and did it have a lasting impact on your photography? Any progress? I’m hoping that the workshop snaps me out of the doldrums and moves towards new dynamic and meaningful work. Note to much to ask fro right? ; )

Thanks

Hi Martin,

I went on a photo workshop in the Canadian Rockies about twelve years ago. It was an oppurtunity to share ideas and experiance as well as sharing equipment. It cost slightly more than just taking the same horse back trip for non-photagraphers, but better suited for me since they did not mind stoping often for photo opurtunities. My opinion on workshops in general is use the money you would spend on a workshop on film and procesing and take the time to experiment. Not all great photographers are good teachers. Having said that, I met Chris Rainier 15 years ago when I was shooting in the North West. He is a wonderful person and I would not hesitate in taking a workshop with him. Not only will you learn alot, but you will have a terrific time as well. Let us know how it went.

Regards

Steve
