"Singletree Farms" is now underway

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I am now pushing ahead with fully establishing my agronomic operation. When completed there will be a year round seeding / limited crop room, 60 to 70 commercial output raised beds, two greenhouses, tree and shrub nursury, produce stand and high output vermicompost and worm farm. This figures on an initial investment of $600 and two seasons growth and expansion. This should have the potential to replace the cash portion of my previous job. Benifits like health insurance , I plan to make from savings plan earnings.

How far off the road are you building your greenhouses, Jay :-)?? Really, though, sounds like you have thought it over thoroughly. Good luck to ya!! BTW...will you be doing mail order??

Greenhouse in the BACK yard now, irrigation pond in front of side yard where the greenhouse used to be :>) I just hope I don't get remarried soon. I'll have to replace the sign at the highway :>)

-- Anonymous, April 01, 2002

If you remarry, Jay, you'll live longer! At least that's what I've heard :-)!!

-- Anonymous, April 01, 2002

Do you live longer or does a bad woman just make seem like an enternity?

-- Anonymous, April 01, 2002

I'm healthier now than I was during my marriage and I've lost 40 pounds so far and my BP is down to 95/70 again. Think I'll "bach" it for a little longer :>)

Ha Ha to your first post, Jay!! And, as for the second...Well...I'm just quoting statistics!! Help...anyone???

Jay...I'm glad you're getting healthy, though! What about mail-order??

I heard a rumour Jay was looking for a mail-order bride???

-- Anonymous, April 01, 2002

Its like the country boy that went to the doctor and was told he only had 6 months to live. He begged for anything to get more time. The doctors advice, " Buy yourself a repo mobile home and a 1986 Dodge pickup truck. Go to the sleaziest bar in town and marry the ugliest, meanest and drunkest woman you can find in that bar. If she happens to be one of the dancers, all the better." The country boy said "If I do all this will I live more than 6 months?" The doc said "Hell no, your still dead by summer, but it'll make those 6 months seem reeaaalll long, especially that Dodge pickup. " :>)

I guess I should start dating again though. Its getting where my dogs and I are forming a sort of communication language. Lick on elbow means "water dish is empty",nose pushing an empty feed dish is dinnertime, whining bark means "trouble in the kitchen (I left water running or the stove on), whine and lick on forearm is "pee time" and when the chow drags the leads and chokers in, I figured that meant "to hell with this sign language, get the picture, buddy".

Marcia,

I am considering mail order for specialty vegetables and shitaakes, "Ohmaha steak style" and possibly converting a mobile home into a processing kitchen to "homestead can" products for sale after I have the foundation business fully established

-- Anonymous, April 01, 2002

Sounds like you have quite a plan Jay. Hope it all goes well. You know, I didn't know all dogs had the same sign language. If I am listening to my dog and understanding, does that mean I am single at heart?? lol...........

Holy Moley Jay! Is there any part of your small plot thats not gonna be under roof?

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2002

Mmmmm! Shitaake mushrooms...our favorite!! Oh, and we also have a Dodge pickup :-)!!

John,

Since I now have no children on the place, I'm reducing the "yard " to a 15 x 25 area in front and 6 feet wide around the house. The raised beds and small irrigation pond will take up 210 x 100 feet, dog pen and greenhouse in the remainder. I am also negotiating a purchase of the acre behind me for future expansions. If you have the opportunity to read John Seymour's "Guide to Self Sufficiency", The one acre BISF diagram on pages 20 and 21 is what I am using as a guide to my expansions. Of course , I am passing on the cow,pig , goats and bees. Someday, I hope to expand to the five acre BISF shown on pages 24 and 25.

Don'tcha love John Seymour's book?!

Okay, I can understand the pass on the cow, pig, goat; but why no to bees? Just curious. (Okay, nosy!)

Jay, you need more land and a helper. Hey, you could always build up. Two story green house? Tiered planting beds? You may start a new trend.

Wildman, (looking up)

What about the mail-order bride, Jay???

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2002

Jay, DON'T do the mail-order-bride thing! The shipping cost would be horrendous.

On the bees, I would like em, but even with an antivenom shot after getting hit, I'm swollen and in the hospital on I.V. for 24 hrs.

No on the mail order bride, S&H would be to high if she was real big and cuddly and I don't know what the return policies on them are :>)

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2002

Hey, if she's cute enough, they might not charge a "handling" charge!

Wildman, (getting excited)

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2002

Anyone got a bucket of cold water for these guys??

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2002

I'm thinking of a local grown one anyway. My ex was from Fl, but her views were from another galaxy.

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2002

BTW, Wildman...where have you been??

-- Anonymous, April 02, 2002

BTW Wildman, I am working on a design application utilizing a panoramic fiberoptic sunlight channelling network to pipe sunlight into a hothouse in a converted warehouse.

-- Anonymous, April 03, 2002

That'd be cute Jay. Each plant with it's own little bit of sunlight? Wonder if you can get sunburn from fiber optics? UV all gone?

Wildman, (techo challenged)

My friend Patrick got a mail-order bride from Peru. They've been married about 3 years now and have a lovely baby boy.

I tried to find "Guide to Self-Sufficiency" by John Seymour at Half.com but I didn't get a match. I did find a books by that author titled "Farming for Self-Sufficiency" and "The Self-Sufficient Gardener". Is one of these the book that you like so well Jay?
