UK - Bank glitch means pay delays

Thousands of people across Shropshire were this afternoon facing cash problems over the Easter break after a computer glitch delayed salary payments from Barclays bank.

Barclays said an error involving the handling of payments and debits had led to a delay in processing payrolls and payments to suppliers for about 20,000 businesses.

It said the problem would be sorted out by tomorrow, but added that because of the Bank Holiday the money would not show up in customers' accounts until Tuesday.

A spokeswoman said people would still be able to withdraw cash over the weekend, even if their salary did not show up on their account balance.

Barclays said the problems occurred on Tuesday night, which meant that payments due to go through on Thursday were delayed.

It said it started telling businesses of the problem on Wednesday.

Mr Steven Bray, managing director of SP Services at Hortonwood, said they had been affected by the computer glitch and staff could not get money out and may not be able to until Tuesday.

He said they had been to the bank to provide money for around 20 staff who were unable to withdraw cash.

He said: "I have been on the phone to Barclays all morning. We have given the staff money to tide them over the weekend. It is not what you need on a four-day bank holiday."
