You might have a look at _Mind, Brain and Adaptation in the Nineteenth Century: Cerebral Localization and Its Biological Context from Gall to Ferrier_ by Robert M. Young, which is available on-line at: http://www.human-nature.com/mba/mba1.html. It is a little old (1970), but still a classic.
