Stupid Question: Strap Lugs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I have a strap on my M6 now, had one before. It seems that No or little wear has been done to the lugs, where previously owned M2/3 have significant lug wear, even though they have no "crescent moon" body wear/bright marks (no straps now), where the M6 does.

Are the M6 lugs lined w/a harder material? It seems likem a good idea. How difficult to replace the lugs on my older M's? They are designed differently.

I asked this question a while ago on another forum (LUG, LEG, etc.) & have also spoken to various repairpersons. Yes, the strap lugs on the M6 (& perhaps the M4) are made of a harder metal than those on the M3/M2 (I believe steel replaced chrome-plated brass) & yes, the older lugs can be replaced. It's a significant, but not difficult, job & can easily be done @ the same time as a CLA or other repair (which is what DAG is doing w/my M2 right now).

m2/m3 = plated brass. now steel, except for millenium/dragon (but not lhsa).

Yes, the older ones wear out. I had the straplugs on my M3 replaced in 1986 or so and they are still going strong.

How much for the change job?

My M3 has reinforced lugs; looks like a rivet below the actual lug. How does Leica deal with this challenge?
