Gary Caldwell to Celtic?

I found this on News Now. Pity if it's true : Celtic to trump Hibs for Newcastle youngster

Scottish football 30/3/02

Celtic are planning to trump Hibs for Newcastle United defender Gary Caldwell. The 19 year-old centre-half won his first Scottish cap in midweek after an impressive loan spell at Hibs.

Newcastle are keen for Caldwell to stay and have offered him a new deal.

But he rejected the two-year offer and Hoops boss Martin O'Neill hopes to land the 19 year-old ahead of Hibs at the end of the season.

Our staggering incompetence - yes Jonno, incompetence - over this issue has the potential to embarrass us for the next 10 years.

I'm with you 100% on that one Mr. Clark.

As if we have a surplus of quality defenders:

Everton's second goal yesterday and Given having to play as a 'sweeper' (not arrongance and clowning, Farthez style), being the latest 'highlights' of our defensive inadequacies :-(

If true, that's terrible news. But I can't blame the kid, he must feel like he'll never get a chance with us. :-(

We can't hold onto every young player though can we? Is he any good? Even if he was as good as Dabs and O'B (not difficult at the moment I know) he does not have the experience to come into the team. He's young and should sit and wait for his chance - the club have offered him a deal but if the instant gratification of football in the SPL is more alluring then there is nowt more NUFC can do is there?

SPL = Nationwide 1st Division North

Lynda - the lad is an outstanding prospect, our best defensive prospect for perhaps 20years. At this juncture there is probably very little we can do, especially if Celtic have thrown their hats into the ring.

However, given his rating I would ask why we allowed him to go on loan to an SPL Club with less than 6 months left on his contract, taking the fairly obvious risks attendant with a highly promising 19 year-old who was soon to be available on a Bosman?

Does crass, unthinking stupidity strike a chord?

I'll be more upset if we lose Stephen Taylor!

no you won't, competent full international at 19 is distinctly different from huge potential at 15/16

I'll swap Michael Chopra for your Diego Gavilan.
