March 28th - St. Tutilo.

Tutilo was born in the mid-9th century and was educated at the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Gall in Switzerland. He was blessed with tremendous intellectual abilities and talents. After schooling he entered the monastery of St. Gall.

Tutilo was appointed head of the cloister school and has been described as a handsome, quick-witted and eloquent teacher. He was a talented poet and orator as well as an architect, mechanic, metal worker, painter and sculptor.

He is perhaps best known for his musical talents. According to tradition, he was an accomplished musician and was able to play and teach all of the instruments in the monastery. He, and a fellow monk, Bd. Notker Balbulus, are said to have written several Alleluia versicles as well as many sequences. Although he is not the one believed to have invented tropes, he wrote several.

Tutilo was also known for his artistic abilities as a painter and he had several exhibits of his work, some of which are said to still be seen in Constance, Metz, Saint-Gall and Mainz. Despite his popularity, Tutilo strove to maintain a low profile and avoided publicity as much as possible.

Unfortunately, of all the poetry and musical works that he is credited with, only three brief elegies and one hymn have been printed. He died about the year 915 and was buried in St. Catherine's Chapel which was later named St. Tutilo's in his honor.

<><><><> Various Martyrs of the Faith

At Caesarea in Palestine, the birthday of the holy martyrs Priscus, Malchus, and Alexander. At the time of Valerian's persecution, all three dwelt on a little farm in the suburbs of Caesarea. When heavenly crowns of martyrdom were being offered in Caesarea, the three Christians were inflamed with the divine fire of faith. They presented themselves to the judge, and demanded why he raged so much for the blood of holy men. The judge at once had them delivered to the beasts to be devoured for the name of Christ.

At Tarsus in Cilicia, the holy martyrs Castor and Dorotheus.

In Africa, the holy martyrs Rogatus, Successus, and sixteen others.

At Norcia (in Italy), St. Spes, abbot, a man of wondrous patience. Pope St. Gregory relates that when he departed this life, his soul was seen by all the brethren ascending to Heaven in the form of a dove.

At Chalons in Gaul, the death of St. Guntram, King of the Franks. He so devoted himself to spiritual things that, leaving the pomps of the world, he bestowed his treasures on churches and the poor.

<><><><><><> The fifth glorious mystery prayer of the Eucharistic Rosary, to be offered before the Blessed Sacrament:

The Crowning of Mary in Heaven, offered for perseverance unto a happy death will merit a crown of eternal glory.

Divine Son of Mary, to make Thy holy Mother partaker of Thy own glory, Thou hast crowned her queen of heaven and earth and appointed her our advocate and the living channel of Thy graces. From the Eucharist not less than from heaven, Thou willest that every grace shall reach us through her maternal hands.

O Jesus, we adore Thee in Thy unspeakable glory, of which Thou hast made Thy Mother partake with Thee, and we beg Thee, through the intercession, a great confidence in her powerful protection and great earnestness in imitating her virtues; in particular her purity, humility, and fidelity to grace.

Imprimatur: + John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York, Sept 19, 1908.

<><><><><> Almighty God, give us wisdom to perceive you, intellect to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate upon you and life to proclaim you, through the power of the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ.
