430EZ flash with old FTb camera?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Does anyone know if the 430EZ flash (I used with my Elan) can be used manually on the 1970s FTb camera? I just inherited an FTb and would like to use the 430EZ if at all possible. If it can, any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your FTb will trigger the flash, but it has no way of specifying to the flash unit what the flash output should be, so the 430EZ will fire at full power.

Now the 430EZ has manual output controls. So if you're willing to sit down and calculate the flash output based on the distance, you could do it. Or if you used a flash meter. Personally I think it isn't worth the trouble - a cheap used autoflash isn't going to cost very much.

In the FTb, you have one of the finest Canon manual camera's next to the legendary F1. It would pay you to buy a cheap auto flash gun just to use with it.
