Tulsa Students Hurt In Chemical Explosion

School Evacuated For Brief Period

TULSA, Okla. -- A chemical experiment exploded at a Tulsa high school Wednesday, injuring five students.

A student was mixing a heated beaker of potassium chloride, sulfur and possibly a third chemical during a class at Bishop Kelley High School when the accident occurred about 8:30 a.m., said Capt. Hubert Rouse, spokesman for the Tulsa Fire Department.

"What it created, I don't know," Rouse said. "It's a common experiment that they do."

A male student, whose name and age were not immediately released, was undergoing surgery at a Tulsa hospital for a hand injury, said Brother David Poos, the school's director.

"We have received word they are optimistic," Poos said.

Two other students, one cut by flying glass, were treated at local hospitals, and were expected to be released. Two other students were treated at the scene.

Poos said the school was briefly emptied, but classes resumed later in the morning.

Rouse said firefighters ventilated the area to allow the sulfur fumes to escape.

"We're not going to use that room today and we're bringing in a restoration company for repairs," Poos said.
