Help! 68gto endura bumper problems

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Pontiac GTO : One Thread

Please help !If anyone has any information on getting your endura bumper to line up with the center of the hood and the fenders at the same time . I have had both fenders off. The radiator support off and replaced mounting bushings. The center off the bumper sits almost 1/2 inch lower than the hood when adjusted to line up with fenders. I have put on a second bumper same problem. Could both bumpers be low in middle and is this a common problem? Thanks for any response. Jim

endura bumper

I had the same problem.I loosened the hood latch and put spacers in between the latch and radiator support so that it lowered the hood a little in the center when it was shut.I left the hood bumpers where they were so the sides of the hood didn`t drop just the middle.I got it to drop a little over a 1/4 inch safely.I didn`t want to drop it to much and risk damaging the hood.Worked out great.

68GTO hood alignment

I have been a Pontiac dealer since the 1950's. When the GTO's with endura bumpers were new, the hood, fender's, and front bumper never lined up exactly right. Some worse than others. Typically, the hood would sit slightly higher than the front bumper. Sometimes, this would be made worse by someone not shutting the hood with enough force. Everyone was afraid that they were going to bend or dent the hood if they used too much force. This is true, but you do need to carefully bring that hood down about half way then give it a good forceful "slam". Not so much as to dent the thing, but you have to put some effort into it. Otherwise, it will be shut, but sit up above the front bumper noticably. However, they still almost never lined up perfectly all the way around. Frank
