greenspun.com : LUSENET : MATH Plus One : One Thread

I noticed that we've got a whole bunch of new people around, especially in the Trading Spaces thread. So this seemed like a good idea.

For those new to the board, in "MATH+1" the M is for Maryland Mike, the A is for the newly engaged Al(lison), the T is for the less-than-three-months-and-counting-till-her-wedding-and-that's-why-she-doesn't-post-much T, and the H is for Hannah Beth, not to be confused with Naked (Sometimes) Hannah. The +1 is AB and is to Charisma. The backstory is here.

I am WriterGirl, attention junkie extraordinaire and MATH+1 groupie. I live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan but right now am trying to get my butt back down to the ATL. I write. And procrastinate. And don't have cable so I have seen exactly zero Trading Spaces eps.

Now, tell us who you are, you pretty thing.

Thanks WriterGirl! I've been lurking about the forum for a while but I wasn't sure if I should leave because of the members-only vibe. If you don't mind a little new blood I'd love to post in the MATH+1 forum! About me, let's see... I found ythe forum through the link at WriterGirl's journal which I love reading (except I get really lost when she starts talking about Asian cinema ). My Web presence is very limited - tiny unassuming Web site and that's it, no journal - but I do post to a bunch of mailing lists. I grew up in Upstate New York, went to school at Cornell, spent my senior year at a school in Kyoto Japan, then worked Upstate for a few years before moving to my present locale - San Francisco. Hmm, hobbies. Reading is way up there. I also love to browse bookstores, visit museums and galleries. I'm also a fan of Japanese anime and manga so being in SF is great (we have a Kinokuniya in our Japantown). Single, 32, and no SO in the picture. Oh, I'm also a rather frazzled mom of a complete freak-cat. And I do have cable but it's wimpy so I can't watch TS either.

Age: late 20s-ish Location: Midwest/W.Coast/everywhere transplant currently suffering thru the heat in the aforementioned ATL. Job: manager (hello? vague much?) at a job I used to love but apparently have mastered because it bores me to tears. BUT, that's okay because I'm starting law school in the fall. Status: never been married, currently living with my boyfriend and two ungrateful cats in the 'burbs. Internet activity: not much. just bounced over here by accident and was intrigued so stayed. Anything else you should know: I'm pretty timid at this forum thing, but generally just the opposite IRL.

I live in Dallas and I found this place through Allison's journal, which I found through pamie's, which I found through Dana's.

I just got married 3 months ago and I'm a financial analyst at Dr Pepper/7UP.

I fancy myself as a part-time writer, but I got my ass spanked by Project Greenlight.

Oddly enough, I'm friends with a guy who dated AB when they were in Jr. High in Louisiana. Small world.

I'm Robyn. Atlantan, but living in central PA, engaged to a stone fox (Partner) but not planning a wedding as we are eloping when the time comes - so I am Living Vicariously Through T. If I weren't so sadly tag-challenged I would make those words into a pretty link to that thread.

I have an olj that I am currently neglecting, found MATH+1 through Naked Hannah, working as an executive assistant now and beginning school full time in 2003. I'm 28, hope to have completed school and made a baby before I'm 35, and my goal is to die without ever having learned HTML.

Right now I'm fantasizing about marrying Droogie so I could drink all the Dr. Pepper in the world.

I'm Emily.. I think I got here through Anna Beth's page, because she is my boo and my girlfriend and my fiancee.

Ok, not really, but I wish I could pretend that more enthusiastically. Master V has his work cut out for him, keeping his woman happy.

Anyway.

I live in Pittsburgh, working toward a BA in BS, as it were. Graduating in April 2003, hopefully, with a degree in English Writing (fiction, with a minor in Film).

I have a website, called Mildew and I write there sometimes. I also hang out on 935 sometimes and 3WA more than I'd often like to admit.

I'm a Virgo, I like long walks on the beach, and I'm looking for a guy with a sense of humor. Or at least one who isn't a butthead.

Hi! I don't post here much, but I occasionally check in and lurk. I recognize most of the major players here from squishy, and maybe some of you remember me. I know I met Mike in person a couple times at Fell's Point to Fairfax squishy gatherings. I tend to blend in with the scenery, though, so I probably don't stand out in anyone's memory.

I am 26, live just outside of Baltimore, MD in a suburb called Owings Mills. I am a general practice attorney working with a small firm on an independent contractor basis. Not having a regular, steady income is a pretty hairy experience, but I really do not miss having to play office politics. Sometimes things get incredibly busy and I disappear for awhile, and sometimes things are slow and I worry about paying my bills. But I work best in fits and spurts anyway, so I this is really the ideal job for me.

I'm currently single with no children. I live with a friend from high school and her daughter. The little one turns 2 next Thursday. We're having a party for her on Saturday afternoon - that should be a trip, having a bunch of 2 year olds running around our living room. Sigh. But for the most part, it is a wonderful "auntie" experience - all the fun of having a kid around without the unpleasantness. Yeah, sometimes I do clean up puke and change diapers just to be helpful, but ultimately, it's not my responsibility - I can always just hand her off to my roommate, who cheerfully takes over, and thanks me profusely for what little I do.

I am also a real auntie to a beautiful little girl about the same age as my roommate's daughter. My niece will be 2 in May. She only lives about 10 minutes away from me, so I usually get to see her at least once a week. More if her mommy brings her over to play with my roommate's daughter :)

Anyway, that's probably more than y'all wanted to know about me.

"Right now I'm fantasizing about marrying Droogie so I could drink all the Dr. Pepper in the world."

Are you sitting down? 'Cause in addition to free product, we also have a DP slurpee machine in the cafeteria. That's right. I don't like DP (shhh, don't tell), but I'm told the slurpees are quite refreshing.

We also own Slush Puppie, so we have those machines too.

I'm Leigha, and while I sometimes make my way into the forum, there are plenty of people I don't know and vice versa, so here goes. I'm 23, I work in Server Technical Support for Dell Computer Corporation, and I'm currently trying to get into nursing school. I'm engaged, with a year until the wedding, and I've got two cats, one of which is a bulimic that seems to like horking up on my backpack. I found this forum through Pamie's site, a long time ago. I have a journal in real life that I've been struggling to update lately, but I'm getting better at it. Or at least I hope I am.

Hi, I'm Melissa H, not to be confused with Melissa of mesawyou.com. Although she's a fine person in her own right. I've been posting for a couple of months. I found MATH+1 through Writergirl's journal.

I'm not mentioning my age, 'cause I'm forty and a little sensitive about admitting it. I live with my husband, our six year old son, four cats and some fish in Fremont, CA. I'm an electrical engineer working at a backplane company. Don't know what a backplane is? Think a specialized printed circuit board. My hobbies are reading, some internet surfing and Tae Kwon Do.

I was born in the central coast area of Califronia (Santa Maria), grew up in the LA area, went to California Polytechnic Unversity in San Luis Obispo where I got a degree in Electronic Engineering. I lived in San Luis Obispo for two years, went back to LA for a year, then moved up to the San Franciso Bay Area.

I watch Iron Chef and Survivor religiously but little else. I travel occasionally for my job. I lurk on 3WA and will probably work up the courage to post there eventually. I like music and would like to start playing the piano again. I saw Bill Walton in the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport Tuesday. I wonder if his flight was delayed until 6 am Wednesday morning as mine was? I'm digressing. I like to garden and have to design a pretty little garden/sitting area for the front yard sometime this spring. I tend to write in a stream of conciousness way.

I don't have an OLJ but am tempted to start one every now and then. We'll see.

Okay, I guess, here goes.

Name: Tamara Bea

Age: 19

Location: Emmett, Idaho

How I found MATH+1: Some girl that I know that wrote for this website I got addicted to told me about Al's site one night and I found my way here from there.

Occupation: "Traffic Control Specialist" (really just a flagger for road construction crews, but all y'all had such good jobs I couldn't just put "flagger.")

Education: I am nearing the end of my year taken off from college, and I don't regret taking it off at all. I will probably end up either as a high school Ag teacher, or with a useless Range Management degree and end up being stuck in Bureau of Land Management bureaucracy.

Hobbies: Basketball, Discus Throwing, Hammer Throwing, watching entirely too many movies, Calf Roping, drinking entirely too much beer.

Relationship: No significant other anymore (he was whiny,) but I learned last night that I have a major crush on a thirty year old man. -_-

So...yeah.

Hi, from Texas. I also got here from squishy. I know the A and the +1 irl and I know the M, the T, and the H from back in the days of New Jag City. I don't get online much. But when I do, I try to hit this forum to at least lurk. I'm in the 'burbs between Dallas and Fort Worth. Married, two kids, an office job, which just means that I type alot. I'm job-shopping now so if you know of a job that pays alot for not much work, I'm your gal. Hobbies: reading, gardening, and reading oljs. Toss me some shauce packets, and we'll go visit Mike in his Restoration Hardware crate.

I am Missy. A 25-yr old Pepsi employee with a 4 and 1/2 year old daughter, a Great Dane named, Moo and a SO with so much drama and baggage that I had to start a new journal here to pick up where MeltDown, the old one, left off.

I found MATH+1 through my interactions with it's founders at Squishy.com and their journals.

I enjoy as many vacations a year as possible and I'll go just about anywhere as long as it's hot and there is a beach. I adore hot chocolate, cheddar cheese, trashy entertainment magazines, Fear and The Real World.

I'm Jessa, aka anything but Jessa, and I guess I'm a groupie. I live in Philadelphia and go to Penn Law School. I got my BA in English at the University of Chicago and spent freshman year at Pitt (apparently Journalcon is following me). My journal is called Perpetual Midnight.

I got to y'all via a convoluted road beginning with Emily. If you type "I hate school" into Netscape, you get Emily. And then there were the freaky coincidences involving Pennsylvania, oboe, Pitt, and English, to name a few. So I kept reading and I found Sars. And that lead me to Pamie. Who lead me to most of you. Including Al, who lead me here.

Other than hating law and law school, I don't have many hobbies. I read and do excessive amounts of art, most of it done with the cheapest supplies I can find. Oh, and I hang around delphi a lot.

I'm Stef, aka, uh...Stef. Found MATH+1 through pineapple, though I remember lots of people here from my time lurking at the Squishy forum. I read like crazy, have an OLJ, live in Jersey, and work in politics. Have a three-year-old daughter, two weird cats, and I watch way too much TV; I'm a Buffy fanatic with a Mojo Jojo keychain. Oh, and while I enjoy dyeing my own hair, I often neglect to have it cut and spend half my life looking through my bangs like I was still fifteen.

-- Anonymous, March 25, 2002

Thank you WG, for giving me the opportunity to finally introduce myself properly after lurking around MATH+1 for the last few months. As I have mentioned previously, I find this discussion forum not only fascinating but hilarious and resourceful.

I am 31 years old and live about 15 miles north of Baltimore. As a matter of fact, I live incredibly close to Half & Half Kelly (Kelly, I am in Lutherville) but have never met her, or for that matter, anyone from this forum. I co-habitate in mutual real estate with my boyfriend of 6 years. We met 6 years ago on St. Patrick's Day and any of our friends would tell you that it is no mistake that we met on a day that involves drinking green beer. We share our home with a 5 year old gray cat named Chili and a 2 year old Yellow Lab named Baxter (yes, he is named after Lonnie Baxter of the Maryland Terrapin basketball team).

Like Maryland Mike, I am a passionate Maryland Terrapin fan although I did not attend the university. Many of my family members are graduates of the University of Maryland, including my brother, who graduated from their law school. I spent half of my college career blowing a full scholarship to a school outside of NYC and the other half of my college career attending a local university while working full time.

I work in a very busy but boring procurement office. The thing I like most about my job is that I do not take it home with me. When I leave for the day, that is it. I can say this because from 1993- 2000, I worked for my family's privately owned company and ate, slept and breathed that business. I chose my present job because I wanted to be able to leave here at the end of the day and truly enjoy the things I am interested in without having to worry about my job.

I enjoy being a fan of college basketball, college and pro football, reading, cooking, and am confessing to being an absolute television junkie.

Hi, I'm Jennifer, usually seen around 3WA and TUS under that name and fullmoon at Squishy/Squishettes/former Hissyfit boards. The OLJ is here, the weblog is here.

I'm 23, used to write professionally until the economy tanked, now temping at the university I attended until any kind of permanent job that I am actually qualified for opens up. I recently got engaged to an out-of-towner and am now kinda freaking out at the idea of moving out of my nice little collegiate town that I like to his (which I don't like so much), which is unfortunately looking more likely than our previous plans to both move elsewhere in over a year. Gah, the confusion. In my spare time I surf the net constantly, watch Buffy/Angel/Amazing Race/Survivor and fool around with jewelry making. Any questions?

Hello... I'm Dan, I live in Hollywood, but I went to high school in Birmingham, AL sort of near Allison and go way back with her. Though I'm not really sure how far the friendship well extend, as it seems that I'm the last to know about MOC's popage of the question, reading it here for the first time. Hmmm...

I got a BA in Cinema from SMU in Dallas in 1995, which is where I remained for six years working in advertising on the production end, starting as PA and working my way into set decoration, construction and design. One day, on a "Pepsid AC" job, I met my girl, Tiffany and we've been going strong for about three years. Growing increasingly bitter about the state of my directing career I made a short film called "Delusions in Modern Primitivism" (www.loflinfilm.com) which did pretty well on the festival circuit, winning a few awards here and there. Tiffany was the cinematographer on that film. Based on the short, I was able to procure the services of a big Hollywood agent, Tiffany was accepted into the cinematography program at AFI and we moved out here in August of last year, throwing caution and financial stability to the wind. Since the big move I've landed one job, directing an episode of the HBO series "Oz," which shoots in June.

I live and die by the Boston Red Sox. Mostly die, actually.

My name is Myles. I am 20, I go to Smith College, which is still all- women-thank-you-for-asking. Right now I am finishing up my junior year in rainy, gray Geneva.

I got here from AB and Hannah Beth whom I found through Squishy, which I found through MightyBigTV that was. I also got here from pineapple, whom I found through 3WA, which I found from Plaintive Wail. Which I found through Squishy, etc.

I mostly lurk here- this is my first post, I think- but not very much because I don't have my own computer here. I have an OLJ at myles.diary-x.com, but it is not very exciting and not very frequently updated, due to the aforementioned lack of computer.

I am from New Hampshire. The things I currently miss most about the States are peanut butter candies, May sweeps, Entertainment Weekly, and 24-hour convenience stores.

If anyone out there is interested in the beauty of the animal (pinctada maxima),i.e.pearlshell,please contact me as I have truckload's of beautifully and lovingly created art piece's using both the shell,as well as the pearl's to share with you.

-- Anonymous, May 06, 2002

Truckload's?

Piece's?

Pearl's?

Well, count me in!

(I really shouldn't make fun. But that's a lot of apostrophes.)

-- Anonymous, May 06, 2002

AB, would that be considered an apostrophe atrocity?

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

an apostrophe atrocity?

See, that's why we love Dawn. Well, that and the fact that she's a Maryland fan.

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

Awwww...shucks, Mike...you made my day...it was just a little early morning alliteration.

-- Anonymous, May 07, 2002

Hee! all zee apostrophes - overconsumption.

<-- moving away from the apostrophe atrocity (heh), I just realised after viewing this thread that I never truely introduced myself though I've been visiting for awhile - more like lurking lately since I've had trouble getting it to load, then if it does load, it's late, I read, and I go to bed cause I'm too tired to post.

Anyway, my name's Amber (err yeah; repeating the obvious), I'm 20 going on 21 (next week! thursday! going to buy me a present? thought not!). I like to say wellyeah and hee alot. my life is pretty boring at the moment. it consists of writing drivel, eating, reading books outside, random frustration in flirting and "thinking" about doing stuff. yes, I procrastinate alot or decide it's impossible to do. such as driving. been contemplating that for about five years now....uh yeah. job? who needs a job! school? pbbbbbbt. really, driving stops those things from happening. drive=success. yeah, moving on...!!

I adore books, music and anime. I consume it. I'll read anything I can find. I'll listen to whatever I'm recommended. anime? it's just an obsession. it's never enough. favourite author of the moment: Haruki Murakami. favourite group: Carissa's Wierd (or well, anything at brown records or saddle creek ..bah).

Okay, I think that tells enough about me. anything else ya want to know, just take a look at my sites.
