I think but I might be wrong?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Newcastle have played in 6 penalty shoot outs in competitive matches over the years.

1) Gillingham - Liam O'Brian over the bar
2) Chelsea - TDM took one I think?
3) Blackburn - the game when Shearer missed one with only minutes to go
4) Mackems - League Cup, late Seventies
5) I thing we lost one in Europe in the Fairs Cup days but my memory is shot to bits
6) ?

Wasn't there a shoot-out after the 6-6 against Tranmere in the Zenith Data Systems (or Simod or whatever)?

H&H - was the UEFA shoot-out against either Bastia or Anderlecht? I bet Jonno will remember.

The only thing I can say is that this thread title will have poor old Renee Descartes turning in his grave.

And before you ask, I don't know if Descartes was ever involved in a penalty shoot-out.

Nice one Jonno, give me something to laugh at after me mate dropped the bombshell that he's left me on my own for the Arse (I was hoping he'd drive). So now I have to find a way to travel (I might go tonight with me brother).

Pecsi Dozsa 1970ish

Thought we were the first side to go out the FA Cup 3rd round on pens, or is this the Gillingham one ?

The Tranmere shoot out was a bliddy disgrace - their keeper (Nixon?) was stood on the line doing flippin' star jumps as our guys ran up. At that time you were supposed to keep still!!! The ref was that officious little twerp Mr Key. Never liked him. But I've never liked any of 'em come to think of it!

We lost fair and square to Bastia & Anderlecht

John Key - A good story I heard about him - He was refing ManU and was bollocking Bryan Robson - Robson says 'Do you know who I am ?' trying to use his postion as usual. Key calls the coach on - Best substitute this guy - he doesn't know who he is.

I always had great regards for him. Just coz he was fat and bald with a big nose.

Did we go out on Pens to Bournmouth at home in the fog? I may be wrong.

Yeah we went out to Bournemouth - not in the fog though, it was the replay of the fogged off game. I think maybe Steve Watson was one of our culprits that day?

We also beat Liverpool in a strange competition (Full Members Cup?) in around 1988-ish. Odd 8 team competition with teams from all 4 divisions & it was played at Wembley and the games were only half an hour long or something like that. Spotty McDonald scored for us (possibly past Mike Hooper?) and Gary Kelly saved - it was straight sudden death. Not sure if that counts as competitive, though I think there was a trophy dished out and qualification was based on league form.
