Ear hair removal by owner

Have a mixed, mostly poodle, I think miniature, (he weighs 12 pounds and is 3 yrs. old) who scratches at his ears, and yipes or whines at times as though being driven crazy with pain, or irritation. The vet says there are no mites and no infection. Other poodle owners told me hair needs to be removed. My dog has a LOT of hair in ears. Other poodle owners also mention how expensive it is. Can't afford it. For those who do their own treatments, how is it done? What products and/or tools do I need. Is there a topical anesthetic (sp)?He would be a very happy and healthy dog, if I could just remove this distress from him. Any suggestions. Please?

You can go to any pet store or on the internet and get this powder that you put in their ears and it is real course and allows you to pull the hair out of their ears. Need to do it every 6 weeks or so or else they will be prone to ear infections.
