talk about tapes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : the tape exchange : One Thread

High Fidelity [the book, anyway] had some pretty regimented rules regarding what makes a good mixtape. what're yours? talk about the tricks of yr trade here...go on, it's lonely...

Surprises help make a good mixtape. You know, unlisted religious rantings.Long silences interrupted by the scream of a Faust song. When people's constant singing starts to gnaw at my sanity,I will throw in some ambient music (this does not mean selctions from The Classic Chillout Album,Lazy Sundays 1 or 2 or anything like that).

You know, I've found lawnmower samples work surprisingly well for that very purpose. It wakes them up, at least. As a side-note, can we use HTML here? I'd test something out, but I don't want to look completely stupid.

-- webber (kid_a@drumnbass.co.nz), March 19, 2002.

i dunno i'm uncomfortable w/ long silences.

it's an issue i shd deal w/ i suppose.

-- duane (doorag@eudoramail.com), March 19, 2002.

what all exactly does hornsby or his protagonist in 'h.f.' have to say about mix tapes? i remember the bit in the film about how you should start with something killer, push it up a notch with something even better, and then ease back... seems like reasonable advice to me. chimes with my own long standing predilection for something light or instrumental at the side one, number three spot, at least.

-- Jon (jbywater@unitec.ac.nz), March 20, 2002.

the book is more precise. it says, frinstance, as well as just having a Flow [take it up a notch, or down a bit], you can't put two tracks by the same artist side-by-side unless the whole tape is done in pairs, and that you can't put black artists next to white artists unless the black group sound white, or vice versa. and for cracking- onto tapes, you can't have THE killer song at the very start, it's buried somewhere in side two so they have to listen to the whole thing. yeh, i think that's it.

-- petra jane (petrajane@nightmode.net), March 20, 2002.

black, white, what? that's dumb. but yeah, multiple songs in a row by the same artist, or worse, off the same record, that's pretty slack - unless the whole point is to reflect a record as a record, by either giving representative tracks or both sides of a single or, obviously, a whole lp or something.

-- Jon (jbywater@unitec.ac.nz), March 20, 2002.

the main thing for me is it shd be audible from start to finish over the engine noise of a not-modern car. i.e. no quiet passages, no silences of more than a couple seconds betw. songs or at the end of the side. 'part from that i'm down for whatever.

-- (doorag@eudoramail.com), March 20, 2002.

fukk rules. i just put stuff i like on. and i expect other people to do the same.

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), March 20, 2002.

*claps*
You deserve a prize of some description.

-- webber (kid_a@drumnbass.co.nz), March 20, 2002.

can we infer that mean that fukk, then, is a 'drumnbass' act? it sounds more nu metal? either way, yeah, good on you di! i'm sure they do rule. what order would you put their songs in, though, if you were trying to make a tape of them sound good? would you put the songs by the black band members on next to the ones with the white band members?

-- sadie p (splant@ihug.co.nz), March 21, 2002.

oops! "can we infer that fukk, then...." obviously :)

-- sadie (splant@ihug.co.nz), March 21, 2002.

no, i mean "fuck the rules for making a mixtape". i didn't know there was a band called fukk, but i spose "fuck off cuntface" is close?

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), March 21, 2002.

you guys are wierd. by the way, "A href="http://geocities.com/lucylurex">here you should be able to find a list of all the music i own. who wants a mixtape?

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), March 21, 2002.

they gave me a website but i can't even do html.

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), March 21, 2002.

I'd raise my hand, if my collection wasn't so dreadful in comparison.
I mean, A Flock Of Seagulls? Bananarama? Who can possibly compete with that?!

-- webber (kid_a@drumnbass.co.nz), March 21, 2002.

well i should probably defer myself to someone who calls themselves after a radiohead album, right?

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), March 22, 2002.

if you were being sarcastic, Webber, remind me to come round and { beat you up | play 'i ran' loudly through your bedroom window till you scream for mercy }.

Yes, H.F.s black artists next to white artists rule was pretty dumm. but what about rock musak next to dance/electronic musak? Classic or Dud?

-- petra jane (petrajane@nightmode.net), March 24, 2002.

Wow, like five posts in and I've already inadvertantly started a flame war (AND I can't spell).
No, I wasn't being sarcastic. If I could get my hands on those albums for not much money I would consider myself a lucky man.

Sincerity++

-- webber (kid_a@drumnbass.co.nz), March 25, 2002.

Damn I wish you could edit. If you could my previous post would also say:
As you pointed out, I do enjoy Radiohead's music, and yesterday I almost bought an EMF album. So I try not to judge other people by their collection (unless it's in a good way, you know).

Bah, I'm crap. I'll go over here now. Bye.

-- webber (kid_a@drumnbass.co.nz), March 25, 2002.

hahahahahaha, EMF! you ain't getting outta that one so easily, sonny m'lad! ohhhhh no...

hey, next time y're in the hood, i've got a pile of rekkids i don't listen to/like anymore and CBF sorting into an innernet swaps list. come look thru 'em sometime. yeah. cool.

-- petra jane (petrajane@nightmode.net), March 25, 2002.

-- petra jane (petrajane@nightmode.net), March 25, 2002.

Forgot this place existed.

Di and Petra: Free music is good.

-- petra jane (petrajane@nightmode.net), April 06, 2002.

hassling radiohead fans is so fucking mean!

-- unknown or illegal user (doorag@eudoramail.com), April 07, 2002.

sorry to dredge up that cliche but bangles n bananarama = apples and oranges.

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), April 07, 2002.

or apples & bananas if you will

-- unknown or illegal user (doorag@eudoramail.com), April 07, 2002.

i like nashis better.

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), April 07, 2002.

alright i confess, i havent heard a huge amount of joy division. The only one i could actually sing on command is 'Love will Tear Us Apart'. BUT I have heard large amounts of New Order, and even though i love them their guitar orientated stuff is much better then the keyboard stuff, and i love the vocals ian curtis does, so it stands to reason...maybe. anyway i'm buying a record (closer, maybe) when i have money to spare. which would you recommend? love livvie. p.s. who has heard sy's alter ego ciccone youth's 'The Whitey Album' it is probably the rarest thing i have in my record collection (obviously i need more records then) but i like it a lot

-- livvie (livvietapper@hotmail.com), April 13, 2002.

you should get "unknown pleasures". "she's lost control" is on it, and its fantabulous.

-- di (ladydie6@hotmail.com), April 13, 2002.

Kim Gordon sings about her panties => SY are wikkid.

ditto what Di said. Unknown Pleasures and also one of the compilations that had all the non-album singles 'Substance' [not the N.O. 'Substance 1987'] or failing that 'Permanence' which sometimes pops up in Warehouse cheapie-bins. score.

-- petra jane (petrajane@nightmode.net), April 14, 2002.

this has very little to do with tapes but : petra can i get a copy of things to make and do? i have very little to trade, but i'm sure i could find something. or i could just pay $2. that might be easy. love livvie.

p.s. sy are fucking great. kim gordon is/was sexy. "alice come back its just a kitten"

-- Livvie (livvietapper@hotmail.com), April 19, 2002.

sure. i do prefer random crap, though [the flatmates/people i share a PO Box with get as excited as i do by overstuffed envelopes full of trashy treasure. sure beats television in the entertaining small minds stakes]. address etc = here

-- petra jane (petrajane@nightmode.net), April 19, 2002.

new plan - bri and i are going to combine togeher and give you doble the stuff. and you can send us two copies in return. such co- operation. love livvie.
