Open to suggestions on web hosting and phpwebsite

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

I'm considering taking the big jump into renting my own little corner of the Internet for my two sets of sites in English and Portuguese. Anybody have any recommendations? Experiences? Especially with phpwebsite, which seems to be a good alternative for my needs? I know enough html to be dangerous. Anything else, forget it. So I'm open to guidance.

(Melissa, I didn't see a general Internet category, so this thread is under "Don't Know.")

Be very careful, don't spend more than you can afford to lose. Are you going to do work for other people on the internet or set up your own business selling some product rather than service? I have been watching and seems the internet is now realizing the rule of someone has to pay for the expense and nothing is really free. With in a couple of years at the most, all people and buisness websites will have to pay for the space and the cost of support to keep the server working. They have finally relized that you can not get enough income just selling advertizing space. Lots of websites are just closing down, Countryside mag finally decided that their forum was a dead expense, Several companies are looking at their total internet and deciding at this time where they will continue anything other than email. Look at it very carefully and look carefully every time you get further in. Don't mean to discourgae you but the fall out of 9/11 is not over yet. I'm just waiting for a while to see where the internet ends up.

What are you going to do with these web sites? Personal, business?

If its a personal site then pick on the many freee ones, figure you going to to have to move it every year and be done with it.

If its for a business, Pay money for the site and figure you going to have to move it every year and be done with it.

As for web design, for personal site, use one of the many free low cost web page design solutions out there. For business, figure out what you need, rec-check what you need. Talk with someone to make sure what you need is what you need, re-check again THEN pay someone to build it for you.

Thanks for the perspectives, guys. It's neither personal nor business, but I have poetry, religious, missions, devotionals, etc. So far, have a guy who has granted me space in his account. He's been great, no complaints, but I don't know how long it'll last, and I'm needing to revamp my sites.

So I've started puttin' the big toe in the water. Phpwebsite seems to be something that would fit my needs, but I'll need someone to install it or find a host that will do that. At least, that's what I'm thinking at the moment. Trying to see if that's a good idea.

i use www.christianwebhosting.com for our church website. they are running redhat linux and have a great "management" page to manage mailing list, password, ssh, not sure about php, but i think they allow it. 9.95 a month 8.95 a month if u pay for a year. i looked for a long time before settling on them. they offer more of the services i need. oh yea 200 e-mails and 200mb of space. no i do not work for them in any way. just like the service.
