Any experience with this combination or the 2x Extender in general?

I believe they cannot be used together - the front element of the 2X hits the rear element of the 3.4 APO or some such - or at least some folks have mentioned this as a reason for choosing the f.2,8 non-APO over the slightly sharper APO.

...plus for less money than the APO 2X you should be able to find a 400m f/6.8 Telyt - more reach, same aperture, better image quality than a 1970's APO design on a converter. IMHO

Sorry guys but you are wrong, the APO 2x works perfectly with the 180f3.4 lens, in fact, better than with the 100 APO with which it also works.

Arne, I used the non-apo Leica extender with my 180 f3.4 apo lens before trading up to the apo version. No compatibility problems with either, but the apo version extender is definitely better optically. Better contrast and much better color. Excellant performance, even wide-open, and it fits in my street bag.

Yep - I'm wrong. It's the 1.4X-APO that's incompatable with the 3.4 - sorry!

With telephoto lenses, even non-APO ones, the 2xAPO delivers better performance. I've used both.

I have an offer for a mint Apo-Extender 2x for less than half list. Seems to be a sensible addition for the occasional use I will have for long focal lengths. Thanks for all replies.
