SAN FRANCISCO -- Bank of America customers who have their paychecks directly deposited into their bank accounts were shocked Saturday to find the money missing.

A customer service representative said the money was deposited Friday but was missing Saturday morning because of a computer error at the Automated Clearing House, the national organization that handles the bank's direct deposits.

The bank said customers outside of California could be affected as well.

Bank officials hoped to have the problem resolved by 5:30 p.m. Saturday, but said they would cover the accounts of people who needed to withdraw money if the problem persisted through the weekend.

The bank also will reverse any fines customers might incur because the money was not in their accounts.
