finding buyers -getting started

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Raising meat rabbits for profit : One Thread

Hi all. I started this board because I was disatisfied with alot of the other rabbit boards that where constantly going off topic. As a lot of you know I became involved with rabbits after being taken advantage of by an ex boss. I recently have been getting alot of private emails as far as who I am shipping to etc. I want this board to be an information highway as far as helping other breeders do what I have been doing. That being said, I have spent many hours on the net, on the phone and such finding my own buyers. I am willing to share info such as how to euthanize, get free shipping boxes, etc. I am not willing to hand over the people that are buying from me. I am sorry if this sounds selfish because I dont mean it to be. But obviously if I am selling to so and so and I give so and so name out and you cut the price then all my hard work just went down the drain. There is a market out there. You have to find it. Search the web. Think about animals that eat rabbit in the wild. Bird sanctuaries will buy rabbit. Possibly zoos. Contact petstores that sell snakes. Think outside the box. Make the phone calls. I have found if you call and not email you will get better results.I hope this helps. Again I am not trying to be rude or not helpful but do believe you have to make the effort yourself.

Hey Tracy, that makes perfect sense. I just want to tell you that I have already learned a bunch! I appreciate it. Thanks!!

ps...If you need fryers let me know..lol. I'm in Texas. I am hoping to sell my current crop for Easter and then after that I have some of those snake folks lined up.

I totally agree, Tracy! This is what we call "trade secrets," and your response is perfectly in line with that. All businesses are leary of freely giving out their own "trade secrets" and for the same exact reason which you specified. Like you said... the markets are out there, but you have to do the work to locate them! We can only give suggestions (zoo's, pet stores, wildlife reserves, processors, etc.). For you, your new distributor came about as a result of you spending the money to place an ad! Why, then, should you just give away that info and cut your own throat by so doing? That, in itself, would be "bad business," eh? LOL

Perfectly understandable! I will be selling vegetables, not rabbits, but the techniques of building a market is the same, and I await each installment with bated breath! You go, girl!!!!!!

I have found a greengrocer who has expressed an interest in okra and grape tomatos, and I wouldn't give out his name, either, unless it was to someone who was selling something that I didn't have!!!!

We hope to be on our farm within a year. How do we go about developing a product to sell? How do we find contacts for our products? What would you suggest we raise? We want to be self sufficient too. My wife tends to lean to vegies. No farmers markets in our area. Thanks for your help.

Hank... Most of your questions can be answered simply by visiting the "Commercial Rabbit Industries" web site at:

http://www.3-cities.com/~fuzyfarm/

Be sure to check out the "Alternative Markets" category on that web site!

I am one that is selling rabbits and found this board online. Forgive me for bringing up an old post.... but I have found a buyer for up to 1,000 fryers per week. Will I make money at this? ( $1.10lb up to 6 lb then .60 lb for what is over) I am Canadian so CDN dollars. There is also another processor who will pay $.10 more and will take unlimited amounts, and he sells about 75,000 per year. Should I go for it? We have only pets right now but have about 16-20 holes right now that we can fill. What is the difference for pet rabbit production? Would you say that up to 1,000 fryers would b better than say 1-200 pets? Hope this makes sense, and please email me privately so i can find out where to see the answers! sorry for being dumb about this! Also, how do you folks have your rabbitry set up? ARE most of you going for least labour hr?

Thanks!
