Ipswich's first:

long ball played over the top to Bent, who looked offside, but Hughes may have played him on, I need to see the replay. Bent slots it calmly through Given for 1-0.

Our first:

Long ball to Cort, who takes it down then loops it to Nobby who is fouled via a push in the back. Robert steps up and curls it over the wall, dropping it in the right hand corner with the 'keeper static.

Their second:

Another long ball. Dabizas lets it drop and O'Brien seems to stab at it but pushes it into the path of Bent again, who scores again.

Our second:

Ball played wide left ot Robert, who takes on one (I think) and whips in a pin point cross for Shearer.

Shearer's two disallowed goals (which should have stood IMHO): The first one was a long ball bouncing high from Given's goal kick. With a defender looking likely to get the ball, Shearer goes in for a 50/50 with him, then lobs the keeper from about 10-15 yards out. Great goal, but cancelled off for a foul. Stupid referee.

Shearer's second disallowed was bizarre. Solano got through a challenge after a pass from Hughes and crossed to the back post where Shearer headed it across goal and into the net. Can't for the life of me believe it was chalked off.

I am not responsible for the accuracy of these as we had a lot of similar chances as far as the build up goes.

Worst point of the game was the crowd. We just weren't up for it generally.

dunno about the first disallowed, the second he did look as though he pushed the guy

I felt Acuna was 'falling' for the penalty before the ball was passed to him

0-0 would have been a better reflection of the worth of the two sides

Having seen the replays, the disallowing of both Shearer's goals was an absolute disgrace - decisions that could literally cost the Toon £millions.

There was no foul whatsoever comitted by Al on either goal: on the 2nd Makin realised AS was going to beat him to the ball and the tosser went down like a roll of lino. As Vegetables said, if AS had pushed him he would have gone forward.

Two shocking decisions: however, there was no offside on their 1st goal.

Our penalty was the correct decision: Acuna was definitely pushed, with ex-mackem Makin again the culprit, but did rather exaggerate his fall - still can't believe AS missed it.

We've blown it and I'm feeling really down.

Ne'er mind (he said from 4500 miles away). Have a good drink Clarky and it won;t seem (quite) so bad in the morning. I know its a cliché but these things do even out over the season. We got an offside goal at Notlob which set us rolling in that game.

The big worry now is whether Chewwsee will overtake us. For what it's worth, I don't think they will. The return of LKD and CB will make a big difference. We're not gonna win every game from now on in, but neither are they (figners croseds).

Cold light of day.

What I simply don't understand is why so many of our players didn't appear to be "up" for the first a a series of mini- cup finals where we had to get results to achieve the CL place that months and months of bloody hard work has set up.

Until Ipswich scored we were lethargic, tried to play at walking pace, and allowed mediocre opposition to set the tempo of the game. It seemed as though we were over-confident, believing we could pick up the tempo and score whenever we felt like it. This team is nowhere near good enough to do that; it cost us two precious points and is likely to haunt us in the coming weeks.

This sloppy approach is precisely what Laurent Robert was talking about during the week when he said he didn't want to get to the end of the seasons with any regrets - well, look out!

Clarky, I suppose if we don't qualify for the CL, the team will at least have some experience and know for the better next time...if there is a next time.

Paul - you just can't plan for the next time. You have to grab opportunties with both hands when they present themselves. As you suggest, "the next time" could be highly unpredictable, for all kinds of reasons.

That is what still has me so intensely irritated by yesterday's sloppy performance.

But to be fair, the disallowed goals should have stood, and Shearer rarely misses a penalty. 5-2 and we'd all be happy, regardless of the performance.

If I was an Ipswich fan I think I'd be chuffed with the luck that they got. Three shots on target and they scored with two of them - both from defensive mistakes.

I agree with Clarky that they seemed to think they just had to turn out for the three points. At first I thought Bobby was doing them a favour trying to keep the score down, then I saw him doing his nut and dismissed that particular conspiracy theory.

Penalty aside I thought Alan Shearer was a superhero tralalalalalaa.

as softie pointed out, they were obviously playing the game like a cup final - that's why we didn't win!

A poor game played in subdued SJP. Our attack was far too static - the defence and midfielders had no runners in the channels to feed. Robert was ignored on more than one occasion. I remember Dabizas breaking out of defence, headed for the left wing where Robert stood alone and then Dabs wheeled inside to commit the ball to an overcrowded midfield. YBR did his nut.

The quality of the crosses was very high from both wings and Cort is not a good header of the ball.

I agreed with Dyer coming on in place of Jenas. The young lad played quite well but did not hurt Ipswich and did not link up with Robert. Dyer once on made a deliberate and pointed effort to bring Robert, our most effective and dangerous player into the game - probably under instructions from YBR.

I have said before and it is obvious that our defence is not good enough and I expect that we will not make the CL with the same defence.

Ipswich clearly knew our defensive weaknesses and cleverly expoloited them.

To be honest did they really exploit our defensive weaknesses?

A long ball over the top that just beat the offside trap and a goal on a plate from O'Brien's mis-controlled pass. An element of luck if you ask me.

I saw BR on more than a few occasions doing his nut (as True quite rightly put it) when Robert was ignored. He was out wide on the wing and players seemed to be turning the other way. I'm not sure if there was any deliberation in this though.

The stupid thing is that Robert was easily our most creative player going forward and had we got him involved more I'm sure we would have increased our chances of winning.

Let's just hope this is just a smoke-screen for our fantastic win at Highbury on Saturday (that's a big hope by the way, as I think we'll get tonked big style)

Something that I think contributes to the problem of feeding the ball to Robert is that tends to hang a little too deep and look for square passes on the halfway line. I noticed this yesterday when on several occasions the man in possession - including Dabz on the occasion True referred to - held the ball waiting for Robert to go into an more advanced position. When he didn't they turned away and played it to someone else.

I think they have to learn to just give him the ball, irrespective of whether they feel he is the ideal position to receive it or not.

What Distin does superbly with Robert is play intelligent balls into space. He is the only one recently I've seen actually link up with Robert this way, playing it down the line for LR to sprint onto.

I like the way he runs onto them though, just jogging until the ball is played, then a full on sprint. It makes you appreciate his pace as well as making it difficult for defenders as they have to turn and run at the same time.

There are also little things about some of our players that a hell of a lot of fans take for granted. Take a long ball out wide from anyone. Robert or Solano would take it down and stop it dead with relative ease. Get O'Brien or Gary Speed to do this and they will most likely struggle. Solano's volleyed crosses are another thing which is a big asset to us, as not many can pull them off. I can only remember Daniel Cordone doing anything like that last season and it coming off (Boro away I think, for a Goma header?).
