I wish there was a FAQ that covered this. I've posted an answer to this question more times than I can remember. Capacities on CD-R/W discs are listed for CD-ROM format. The actual discs themselves contain more space for data than what is listed. For example, a 650 MB CD-R probably has somwhere around 740-750 MB on it. However, CD-ROM format uses some of this space for redundancy and error correction. VCD and SVCD use a different format on the disc than CD-ROM and they do not make use of this error correction. Thus, these areas of the disc are available to store data. That's how someone can put a 700 MB VCD on a 650 MB CD-R. In case you wondered, I do not know of any way to make the "extra" space on a CD-R available for CD-ROM use except to use a format other than the standard one for CD-ROM.
