Mabbott's work on Poe's poetry is useful for influences and history. The Dead Sea cities(Gomorrah) are probably a model for the poem. One of many works decribing the horrible tension of silence or a world in stasis waiting for a single change to precipitate an Usher-like collapse. Companion piece to "The Valley of Unrest" also with Biblical connotations. Suspended decay(M. Valdemar) is a recurring theme and Poe loves to hold that note, this death that is not death.
