Newcastle consider loan deal for Serie A keeper Italian football 13/3/02 Newcastle United boss Bobby Robson is considering a short- term loan deal for Brescia's Czech international keeper Pavel Smicek. Smicek has been out of the starting eleven for several weeks and Robson is hoping to bring the former Toon custodian back to the club for the remainder of this season. The loan deal is set to be extended to a permanent move if Brescia are happy to part with Smicek.

Confirmation of the .com indication that this won't happen is on Sports.com:

Newcastle have failed in talks to bring former goalkeeping favourite Pavel Srnicek back to Tyneside.

The Geordies contacted the 34-year-old Czech keeper this week to offer him a job at St James Park. But Srnicek, currently playing for Brescia in Italy, turned it down when he learnt he would be third choice behind Shay Given and Steve Harper.

Boss Bobby Robson said: "We have talked to Srnicek but we did not reach agreement with him. I told him that if he did come back, it would be as third choice."

Robson is still in the market for keeper cover while Jon Karelse recovers from a knee injury that is likely to keep out the Dutchman for a further month.

"We might have to look at it again, but we have 17-year-old Adam Collin coming through and I'm quite pleased with him" added Robson.
