Pires

Anyone see that interview with him last night?

Couple of interesting things came up. Firstly, how poor he was in his first season at Arsenal and how the fans are only now seeing what he's capable of. So even he admits it. Secondly, his grasp of English (ie. almost non-existent after a year and a half. Even with a club like Arsenal, you'd have thought he'd have learnt a bit..

Why, they all speak French. Even the Brits are having to learn it.

I'll forgive Robert for his lack of English in that case!

Is Pires' English that poor still, or is just that he prefers to speak French whenever possible? On the few occasions I've seen Nobby interviews over here, it seems he's always speaking Spanish.

As long as players learn enough of a common language(English, Spanish, French, whatever) to communicate on the pitch and in training, then I'm not that bothered what they speak when going about their daily lives.

Nobby was interviewed on the TV at the weekend and his English was pretty good.

Well, Ciara, the interviewer tried to talk to him in English! It really was poor - not as good as Henry's for example.

I agree about language on the pitch but I think it's a shameful waste of a God-given opportunity not to learn a language if you live in that country.

Agree with you on that, Dougal. I just don't understand how anyone can live in a country with a predominant language different to your own, and NOT pick it up or want to make the effort to learn it. Just for your own sanity in getting through everyday living if nothing else.

a bit lofty ladies... some people aren't always that good at learning! just because you are bright, doesn't mean others are, or indeed they may just find it tough! i find Spanish and Catalan tough - but i'm not very clever, so i'm not that surprised! give these lads a break, i'm sure in time they'll pick it up.

Swift, I'm not sure that it's about being clever - I'm no Marie Curie - although some people are clearly better at languages than others just like some people can paint while others can't. Having said that, I'd have honestly thought that these lads are bright enough to pick some stuff up.

If Robert wants to learn English he's not exactly in the best place is he? I mean, it's not exactly the lingua, erm, franca here is it?

Yiz aall taak leyk a happ'ny book wi' nee leaves in.

I came to England from Geordieland in 1972 and still have problems with the lingo. I can just about make myself understood but these English in Manchester and Cheshire certainly talk funny.

As for the press they seem to not understand that Geordieland is a different country and seem to think we're part of England. Strange.
