Newcastle chasing Hasselbaink From Newsnow: it's of Chelsea FTT origins:

Hot on the heels of the Kevin Phillips to St James’ Park story, we now hear the Magpies are ready to table a bid for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

The Magpies are desperate to put their faltering championship bid back on track and what could be a better way than doing that than buying a star striker? Chelsea’s Hasselbaink has been on fire this season, and seemingly thwarted in their attempts to bring Phillips to the club Newcastle are ready to break the bank to get a striker.

Sources suggest Hasselbaink has fallen out with Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, which is why the Blues are unlikely to oppose a move. A bid of around £20m is expected, and ironically with that money Chelsea are likely to table a bid for Phillips. It’s set to be a veritable transfer merry-go-round!

I would be amazed if this happened. Bates said they refused to sell Flo to a Premier League team and so they sold him to Rangers. There is no way they would sell Hasslebaink to any team in the EPL never mind one in the top 6.

Having said that, I'd have him

Is now the time to delve into the transfer market before the transfer deadline, to consolidate/improve our position? or do we wait until the summer? I think newcomers at this stage could disrupt team spirit. Any views? Also I don't think Shepherd is contemplating new personnel at this time.

Whilst I'd love to have him, does anybody really think that we have a spare £20 million. We only managed to fund the Jenas transfer because of TV money.

Enforced desperation due to the gag having been removed on naming the player not a million miles from SJP who's been a naughty boy not once but twice, and who will now retire from football to a monastery in the Outer Hebrides.

So who is this naughty player then?

There was a picture of him in the Daily Mail this morning with the face blanked out...it didn't look like anyone I recognised...

Howweh Gav. I was just trying to start a rumour that's as likely as us getting Hasselbaink. :-{E}

It's apparently someone completely underwhelming.....

Regarding JFH, I'm not sure whether he'd cost £20 million mainly because his temperament seems to put off a lot of purchasers (and, by and large, the Dutch National Coach). I guess the reason we've been linked is that he looks like a Shearer replacement. I think he would be our entire transfer budget so it does look unlikely.

Nice that we are once again being linked with decent players instead of the likes of, erm, Paul Murray.

£20m for a 30-y-o is too much. There must be better options for that sort of money.

BTW I notice that Brescia have denied that we are interested in signing Pav as cover for Shay. Whether or not we are interested I don't know, possibly it was just press speculation.

Someone completely underwhelming...hmmm...what's Robbie Elliot be doing recently?

He was watching the resorves last night!

bobs kicked him out of the team, his plea has been kicked out by the judge and his wife has kicked him out of the house, so he's forced to go to KP - NOT fair :-)

Oh, I gather we are also signing Ronaldo on loan til he gets back to fitness as Inter can't play him until he is properly fit while he wants to play for Brazil in the World Cup and is happy to get his sharpness back with us.

There's really only one thing to say that: injury-prone player + Newcastle United. Marriage made in heaven.

err, where does that come from doogs?

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

Ronaldo and Bellamy up front? not the preetiest of striker partnerships is it?

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

up against Keown ?

It's on one of my work newswires. It's in the middle of a serie A thing so I'll cut and paste it later.

I read the Ronaldo thing a few days ago. In the same paper it suggested Dyer would soon be on his way (possibly to Leeds) so i had to check the date and make sure I hadn't wandered back a year through some time portal.

I'd be chuffed if we got Hasselbaink

Forget his age, he hasn't had any serious injuries and still has a heck of a lot of pace. Still 3-4 excellent years in him.

Nobody would be able to stop be smiling if we got him.
