tiffen polarize doesn't work

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

i bought tiffen polarize for $20. It's suck, in my opinion. I cannot even tell the different when i try to saturate the sky. If anyone have tiffen please let me know if this something wrong with filter or what.

You have to understand that a polarizing filter only works on certain angles rom the sun. The effect may vary widely as you move the camera. Do you also realize that you have to rotate the front of the filter to get the effect you are looking for? Just putting the filter in front of your lens is not enough.

$20 seems pretty cheap. Are you sure that you have a polarizer? Does the glass element rotate independently of the mounting ring? What edge markings are on the filter? What does the glass look like?

I have never encountered a polraizer, however cheap and nasty the brand, that didn't work.

Polarizers can be damaged if overheated. I found one that had been left in the sun. It was still dark but had sort of a yellow cast to it and it didn't work as expected.
