Brenda-theres a great book called-"Crocheting in Plain English" that is wonderful-its geared towards beginning crochers but the goal is to do your own projects without relying on patterns. The author shows how to calculate stitches and all those things. Perhaps you could get it through Interlibrary loan? The same author wrote "Knitting in Plain English" and I see it consistantly in lists of "must have" knitting books. I have both and treasure them. The author is Maggie Righetti.
