E24 - tight focus ring ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi all,

Does any 24 elmarit user here have the same problem as I do. the focusing ring is very tight, compare with the 35 cron/asph. Should I get it fixed ?

Thanks

Jeff, my 24 Asph and 35Asph feel about the same. But my 24 is over a year old and I just bought the 35 2 weeks ago so perhaps my 24 has "loosened" up a bit since new.

Jeff,

My 24, purchased about a month ago, is significantly tighter than my 35 'Cron ASPH that's about 18 months old, but still focuses smoothly using a single finger on the tab. Thus, I think you're seeing "normal" for the lens when new.

Ive tried a few 24mm ASPH ranging from new to second hand and they are all extrememly stiff. Ive been told its due to the fact that they have not been used much, but I dont really believe this. This has put me off getting one, plus the aperture ring is a bit fiddly to use with the hood on as well.

Then again the focussing ring may be that stiff as you dont have to focus that often with these wide angles. (plus it prevents a set focus range from being shifted?)

I proposed that Leica dials-in stiffness depending on the focal length:

21-35, light effort

50, normal

75-135, stiff

because of focus shift when the ring is bumped; wides don't shift distance/degree as much as tele's.
