greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

Hi,

I'll visit New York next weekend. I appreciate if anyone could tell me where is good second hand Leica and Rollei shop in New York? I'm looking for Leica screw mount lens and Rolleiflex. I'll stay around 7th Ave.

Thanks, Take Michael

Try Rich Pinto, he has good prices and is a nice guy. www.photovillage.com

I like New York for mail order. Sales tax when there in person is 10%. And no store has a stock that compares to eBay at any moment you might choose. I have purchased a couple of items from Rich Pinto, and agree that he is an excellent dealer.

Clearly Phil hasn't been to NY - the sales tax is 8.25% not 10%. My limited experience is that the best dealer for new and used equipment in NY is Ken Hansen Photo @ 509 Madison Avenue - phone 212.317.0923.

I've done business with both Rich Pinto of Photo Village and Ken Hansen Photographic. I recommend them both, although Ken Hansen is my personal favorite. I haven't been to his Ken Hansen's new location, but based on my dealings with them over the phone the service is great as always! Ken Hansen also stocks both Leica and Rollei. I'm not sure if Photo Village stocks Rollei or not.

Keep in mind, though, that most of the camera stores in NYC are closed on Saturday, and close early (around 1 or 2PM) on Fridays. Check archived threads on where to buy Leicas in NYC -- it will give you at least half a dozen places to check out.

Thanks for all of your answers. Richard remind me important information. Actually I'll be in NY on Friday and Saturday. Is there any stores open on Friday and Saturday?

Hello:

The only major store I know of in NYC that is open Sat is Calumet on 17th or 18th steps from Broadway. They are very friendly and helpful.

Cheers

Is Ken Hansen open on Saturday? I don' t know about Photo Village. I do know Adorma, B&H, and Wall Street Camera are all closed on Saturdays. Your best best is to call and see who's open. Or try their websites and see if they have store hours listed.

Lens and repro Equipment Corp at 33 West 17th St. (www.lensrepro.com) does not close early on Friday, though they are closed Saturday. A candy store for large format -and with large prices- they also have large stocks of used Rolleiflex, a large selection of Leica SM and a smaller stock of Leica M. Very honest and good about returns, etc....

One store that has (limited) Saturday hours -I think 10-2, check their website- is Photo Habitat at 928 Broadway. I've never bought from them but they seem to be popular with N.Y. pros.......

Ken Hansen is open M-F 9am - 5pm Phone# 212 317-0923 509 Madison Avenue 18th floor. I think it's between 51st & 52nd st. They are one of the few reputable dealers in NY.

I second Ken and Mike's comments. Ken Hnasen is open on Friday (but not Sat or Sun) from 9-5PM. ALSO, the NY tax can be circumvented legally IF you have Ken ship it to an out of state address!! You obviously pay UPS costs and don't have the use of the equipment the day of purchase but this is your decision. Ken is honest and a joy to work with. His staff is also great. Welcome to NYC.

Adorama and B&H close fridays at 1pm or so. so you have a chance on firday. don't know about the rest, but I would guess it is the same.

Before you get to New York you can see some of the pre-owned equipment at their websites:

Ken Hansen: www.phototoys.com Tamarkin: www.tamarkin.com

I don't know the other websites. Also, Tamarkin is open on Saturdays. They just moved to a new location, around 20's and Broadway (the exact address is on their website).

I would rather buy from a legitimate dealer than from eBay because of the return policy and sometimes a warranty on the product.

After having your purchases shipped to your home state (to circumvent the high New York city taxes of 8.25%), you're supposed to pay your local sales taxes on the goods. This applies to anything that is shipped across state lines. The don't ask don't tell policy seems to be in effect in this case! (PS. I DON'T work for the IRS.)

Happy hunting.

i guess buying the first pages of shutterbug, year in and year out, has been a waste of money for poor stan tamarkin!! tamarkin is always open on saturdays (as is photo habitat and possibly eli kurland).
