Why should Joel have all the fun?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I got to thinking why Joel got to have so much fun being all his different internet personalities. I decided I wanted to try it, too! But not maliciously or anything. Anyway, lately, I've been visiting CS and posting as others (only funny to me, though, but hey, I get my humor however I can these days!)

Just for virtue's sake, I promise I will use some iteration of -ish in my moniker (except I broke the rules on the "How many homesteaders are non-white thread"). Not that you really care, but I didn't want to get outed later and accused of some nefarious intent...

And nobody answered the question posted in the first paragraph!?:

"Wonder why homesteading attacks so many white folks? "

I understand spelling errors and quick posting bloopers as well as the next person (having posted so many times, the numbers just add up to indict me!) But didn't anybody see the humor in the question?

Okay, I'm getting old and silly. Just humor me, 'kay?

Hee-hee - I found one of you!

BTW; Joel misses you - he wondered where you went on the forum stats thread. Ooooh - that's scary! Glad he doesn't miss me!

now sheepish.......I cut and pasted that in my answer. I thought it was hilarious........yes, sure attacks me pretty regularly. Now I must go and see who you were. That sounds like fun. Can honestly say that, other than the time I was messing around here and everyone knew who I was, I have always been myself............except one time on the Freedom Forum before I got brave enough to post as me.

Yeah, Sheepish, I got the humor in the "Wonder why homesteading attacks so many white folks? " line, but I didn't think pointing it out would make me very popular. I'm already persona non grata for posting on the Apology from Gloria thread. I stuck to my word on that one and didn't go back to answer whatever insults were piling up against me after I said I was not going back to THAT thread.

Have your fun, Sheepish -- I hope it doesn't come back to bite you in the rear! I suspect a lot won't find any humor in it at all. Won't Chuck be packing the whole thing up and moving it soon, anyway? Will one of the others then become the place to go? Or will everyone trundle off with Chuck wherever he goes?

Polly, I saw that Joel was "missing" Sheepish, too -- just made me think "What the heck are you talking about?!?!"

-- Anonymous, March 09, 2002

Where in the world did Joel post that?!!!! See, I don't get around much anymore!

I'll get bored with this in no time, so I doubt I'll get into any serious trouble....

-- Anonymous, March 09, 2002

It's under 'Interesting Stats on the Forum', Sheepish. I saw it too and thought about mentioning it as well, but I then I was torn as to whether to tell you that their resident psy...er...um...'reality challenged' boor was looking for you. Sort of wondering whether to be the bearer of bad tidings or say nothing and hope it would go away.

I've gotten so down on the whole site that I doubt I'll make the jump when they go.

-- Anonymous, March 09, 2002

Yeah Sheepish. I saw that too. Rebeka misses ypu tpp.

-- Anonymous, March 09, 2002

Ok, so I posted on the "Donations" thread over there started by Hoot. And then I noticed a "mac in AK". Was that one of you comics with 'mackinac' or some other word play? What a thread too. Its like they'll beat you on the head if you won't send money through the mail. Geez! I may need some assistance as I chose to use my real address. Maybe not smart. Now if I can find an alter ego......

-- Anonymous, March 11, 2002

I think I'd rather send my money to Stan....

-- Anonymous, March 11, 2002

Some pretty poor behavior going on right now. Here we are again talking about the Countryside forum again. Sad.

......Alan.

-- Anonymous, March 11, 2002

Stan on South Park? Did he ever get to kiss Wendy Testaverde? (Sorry, I'm depraved on account of I'm deprived!)

Okay, seriously, who is Stan and does he want money?

-- Anonymous, March 11, 2002

Sheepish, check out the donations thread. Stan tends to have some short sharp comments generally and this upsets folks. Really he was just saying what was on his mind-no name calling. I agree that if I was sending money out, he'd probably get some of mine.

Alan and everyone, did I miss something, did I promise not to talk about other forums?

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

No, Stan doesn't want money. He's just being his usual obnoxious self. Unless he needs to ask a question he likes to say things just to get reactions from people. Only one person in that thread actually called anyone a "name" and that was "stupid ninny" in an oblique reference to Stan and that other fellow's offensive posts. The whole controversy in that thread has more to do with *who* was posting rather than *what* was posted.

When Countryside finally does leave LUSENET and makes the jump to another server it looks like about a quarter to a third of the traffic in THIS forum will go with it since it's about Countryside.

Are we going to develop our own identity regardless of other forums or remain forever a private club where we can discuss who said what to who in Countryside without others being able to overhear us?

.......Alan.

I believe that Alan has made a very interesting point here. If we are able to be at all honest with ourselves, every unhappy moment we have had here has begun with some commentary on what was said on another forum.

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

Thanks for clarifying. I return to the question of what we will do when Lusenet goes down? Are we to consider moving to our 'alternate' site now? Does anyone go there on a regular basis?

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

I must have missed that part. What alternative site are we talking about? I'd like to bookmark it for the next time Lusenet goes down. Seems to be happening with a greater frequency lately.

.......Alan.

-- Anonymous, March 12, 2002

Alan, you can find our back up board for when Lusenet crashes by going to the following thread:

Archives: Forum Related: New Back Up Forum

Madame moderator, do you think we should re-post the link to the back up site, as we don't have much participation at the back up board, even when Lusenet is down? Should we ask all participants to go to the back-up site and do a roll call thread there or something? I know you've got the e-mail addys, and I've got most of them; but as you know; I'm link impaired!

Alan, we rather enjoy at times poking gentle, and sometimes not so gentle, fun of what transpires at other forums, CS certainly doesn't have the monopoly on the "poking", but by shear volume of providing "interesting" material, they are by far the most common "pokies". Sort of like Letterman having so much material to work with with Duyba ;-)!!!

But we also poke fun at ourselves, so we are not bigotted in just poking fun at others, we do an excellent job at laughing at ourselves too, make reference at all the "Blonde jokes" here, and several of us, me included, are blonde.

So, please don't take us the wrong way, we are merely laughing at the silly actions of others, no matter where they "reside", and I think the ability to laugh and have fun with us all keeps us from all being admitted to the local looney bin. Ot at least it does for me ;-).

Actually, Diane; the only time I ever felt as though I wanted to leave this forum was prompted by a post that originated on this forum. I am aware that this is not so for everyone here, or for those who have already decided to leave the forum. However, since the post that upset me was political in nature; I made the decision when I did return to this forum after my hiatus during my vacation, to no longer participate in such postings here.

Alan, I'm sorry that we're boring you by re-hashing things from other forums. I gather that perhaps you wonder why we don't answer the posts on the forum of origin, rather than slinking back over here to talk behind their back? Most of us here at BTS were prolific posters at Countryside in the early days - in fact; many of us still have our names in the top portion of the posters list even though we have barely posted at all to CS in the past 6 months to a year. The reason that many of us do not post on controversial (mainly religion oriented) subjects over at Countryside or other forums on Lusenet is because we got spammed with multiple porn, viri, and "You're going to hell" messages after having done so in the past. Does this mean that we can no longer discuss the things that pique our interest? No, to me, it simply means that we can discuss these subjects without having to fear having our children subjected to vulgarity and our computer equipment trashed. We may not agree with each other, and we may occasionally go stomping off in a huff; but at least we trust each other and know that none of us would deliberately inflict pornography, damage equipment or force prosetelysing on the other members of this forum family. Yes, we could go get a hotmail addy or post under a false name, and some of us have in order to be able to respond without fearing this type of repercussion. I choose to post under my real name and addy; but to do so in a place where I feel safe.

As for Stan and Mitch: while I do not, in any way, shape or form condone Stan's current actions; I can see the triggers. I don't approve; but I understand. I wish he hadn't done what he has done, because I feel that he is one of the good guys, and this has totally ruined his credibility with a lot of folks. He's going to have a lot of clean up work to do after this episode, and I don't envy him that. On the other hand; I keep trying to think well of Mitch, but so far the only thing I can find to think highly of is the fact that he served as a Marine in Vietnam; his posts at CS, CF, and other lusenet forums - including here, in the early days before we went password protected; lower my opinion of him. Stan is also a veteran, having been injured in combat - not that it's something you hear him say in every other post. Nor do you hear JOJ bringing up his service time repeatedly; or any of the other folks who frequently post who were members of the armed services. I'd still rather send money to Stan, not that he, or anyone else is asking for it. I freely admit that the fact that Hoot is the one taking up the collection for Mitch probably has a large part to do with my determination; as I am of the "Lay down with dogs, get up with fleas" mindset.

If anyone wishes to correspond with me regarding this, please feel free to use my e-mail if you do not wish to respond via the forum.

Polly, I stand corrected. sorry

-- Anonymous, March 13, 2002

Wow, that pretty well sums up a lot of history here, and there, Polly!

Geez, I don't know exactly what "triggers" Stan suffered, but you're right, he certainly has lost a lot of credibility.

-- Anonymous, March 13, 2002

Yes, I think it is hard to understand Stan since I only see him on CS really. Guess I gotta go see those other forum once in a while.

-- Anonymous, March 13, 2002

Good grief! What bad timing for me to be even thinking about spoofing folks. I had no idea that such sick nonsense was taking place on those other forums.

I'll just stay with my own opinions and use my "sheepish" moniker.

Sheesh. What's going on over there (I just peeked, don't want to delve into it) is kind of like a global version of what was going on at my "place" a year ago. Ugly.

I hope they get it resolved.

Are you all talking about the same Stan who was the subject of the CS post "Stan, Stan he's our man!" ?? Or something like that! Can't remember the exact posting. If it is the same Stan...what has changed with him? He seemed to have quite a group of supporters on that post. Like Anne, I guess I'd better go check out those other forums occasionally :-)!!
