Anyone ever made floorcloths?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Style Homesteading : One Thread

I saw a book on this subject that I was thinking about getting, but thought I'd ask here first. I've always loved the look of the rugs and would love to make me one, but was wondering how durable they are. Does the paint rub off when the rugs are walked on? Are they decorative items only and can only be used as such? Hard to clean? I was wanting to make one to put under my kitchen table, but didn't want to go to the trouble if they weren't very practical. Thanks for any tips!

Annie, I've never made one, but I've read a little about them, and I've seen them made on craft shows on tv. They are supposed to be very durable, and easy to keep clean. I know the canvas has to be primed before you paint it, and then sealed after you paint it. That being said, I have no idea what exactly is used to prime or seal the rug! Sorry about that. The one I saw on a craft show was being made to go under a dining room table. The woman who made it showed how you could just take a damp cloth or sponge and clean up any mishaps. Sounds to me like it would work fine for your kitchen table.

If you do make one, please keep us posted on how it comes out, okay?

Thanks Cheryl for the info. Think I'm going to get the book and give it a try. I'll let ya all know how it turn out. There's so many things I want to learn to do and I figure since I'm not getting any younger, I better get myself going and learn some new things. Guess that's what I like about homesteading....always something new to learn!

I shouldn't have been in such a hurry to hit "enter". I was poking around some more, and one site said you could also make placemats. Which made me think, you could also make a table topper that fits your own table exactly. And maybe even match (or at least color coordinate with) the floor cloth. You could even do the table top/placemats first for your "trial" runs.

Hi Joy, thanks for the web site addy. Will definately check it out. I never even thought to start out with place mats. It'd be alot better to make a mistake on them instead of a large rug. Training material! :) Thanks!
