Reglue or replace leatherette on Leica I?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

The leatherette covering on my c.1937 Leica I (Standard "E") came off in ONE PIECE. It has turned a nice tobacco color and is brittle, but has no tears, chips, splits, etc. Should I reglue it back on or should I replace it with new material? If you lean towards replacement, I'd appreciate any recommendations for re-covering professionals in the US. Thank you.

If there is no damage to the vulcanite, I would put it back on. Consider yourself lucky it came off in one piece. For new vulcanite recovering, I would suggest http://www.focalpointlens.com/fp_intro.html

Focal Point in Colorado. They do excellent work on screw Leicas and M Leicas.
