goat chow/deer checkers

Hi all, have a question about feeds.Normally I feed my girls purina goat chow. I have to go 60 miles to get it as the store here refuses to order it. Two weeks ago I went to get it and the store was out.No problem the truck was coming in a few days and I was not completely out.Dh went to get it last week, oops! wasn't delivered. So he bought a bag of purina deer checkers.I have read the labels and they contain the same things but in different amounts. The deer checkers has more of everything except fat.The goats like it A LOT.It is also two dollars cheaper a bag.No animal products or medications.Don't know if I'd switch to it but as an additive or temporary substitute seems like a good thing.Any thoughts?

Hi! Actually even Nutrene's deer ration is better than their goat ration. I have always said that our goats are closer to milking deer than they are to sheep! I am not a fan of quick switches but perhaps if they carry this, someone is feeding alot of it? Vicki

Hi Vicki, obsessed goatlady here. Wouldn't be a quick switch as I still have 1/3 bag of chow left. Just getting so frustrated about not being able to get the chow. don't know why it's so hard to find a reliable dealer. have contacted Purina directly and they said they'd look into it.LOL big-time.The deer checkers are available because this is deer hunting country. Weyco has just started leasing their timber lands to clubs. it is legal to bait deer as long as you stop during the actual hunting season. So maybe this would be a more relible feed. If it is good for the goats I think I will see if I can get it localy and save myself the drive.Dh would be so pleased.

Vicki P., don't forget to stock up right before deer season so you won't run out when the feed stores stop stocking because they think there's no demand!

Well, no luck on the deer checkers either. Not sold locally and Dh bought the last bag at the other place. The feed store here stocks two other Purina feeds just not goat chow. They want me to buy the feed they stock, which has animal products and is not made for goats. No Way am I feeding that! Now if I could just get these good old boys to understand that.
