Millennium woes sink to new low 06/03/02

LONDON (Reuters) - The nation's millennium projects hardly stand out as shining examples of new age workmanship.

The capital's much vaunted Millennium Dome was a financial nightmare, the bridge marking the turn of the century wobbled, and now a 21st century space age tower in Scotland is sinking.

The 127-metre (416-ft) high Millennium Tower in Glasgow, which opened last year at a cost of about 10 million pounds after a series of construction delays, has been closed for about two months.

An official at the Glasgow Science Museum, which operates the rotating tourist tower, said it had "moved down" by 15 millimetres during its short life.

The tower is the latest of several expensive embarrassments to mar the country's millennium celebrations.

The government has struggled to off-load the one billion pound Dome and the 18 million pound "blade of light" bridge only reopened last month after a closure of nearly two years because its side-to-side swaying made pedestrians feel seasick. >>>> No mention then of the hugely successful and wonderfully gorgeous Gateshead Millennium Bridge, then?

It's sad they built the tower bit, cos it is a disaster yet the rest of the Science Centre is fantastic. Our kids love these places and we've been to similar types in Tampa, Stockholm, Belfast, and the one down at Marlboro bus station but the Glasgow one was miles better, apart from the tower. And for SuperKev, the chips in the cafe were fantastic too.
