SOngs you wish we didn't sing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Tonight's match got me thinking. I always feel embarrassed when I hear "In your Liverpool Slums" being sung. I wish we wouldn't. I also can't abide these "Stand Up if you hate....." songs.

What songs do you wish we'd never thought of?

"He's Only a Poor Little 'Ammer"

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

I hate that too Bobby!

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

To be honest, I've never felt comfortable singing that I'm a 'boot boy'.

The ditty about Chris Makin and Soops wife lacked a certain 'je n'ai sais quoi pas' for me!

That DJ Otzi Hey Shearer is a proper pain too.

And as discussed before, I wish people would learn the 1st verse to Blaydon Races properly - "We took the bus from Balmbras, And she was heavy laden, Away we went along Collingwood Street, That's on the Road to Blaydon" then the magnificent chorus kicks in.

Pete - It's in the same class as "Geordies here, Geordies there" - at least the "We drink Ex, We drink Brown" bit. I quite like the "Geordies aren't allowed to swear version". :o))

think of it as "boot boys" as in soldiers of the Toon army ... not as in yobbos

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

Peter, as far as I can remember the last of the 'boot boys' became extinct in 1976, it is indeed a ludicrous lyric which always makes me smile, especially when I see/hear young geordie whippersnappers aged about 15 bellowing it out. Pretty harmless really.

Bobby, the incorrect rendition of the Blaydon Races is a far more heinous crime. It's a generation thing I suppose. Shame.

... the "Hey Shearer...." song may not be original, but it's about the only song in our repertoire that doesn't have an '80's vintage, or even earlier.

I think it's bloody great, but then I'm a big fan of the subject which probably makes the difference.

cheer up whomever , sh*t football team the oppo allways score when we sing this. Stand up if u hate allways p's me off.

I like the oldies like bertie me said to j harvey etc...

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

Davey - that's what I meant. As far as I know the above is correct (i.e. it's not "And she was heavy laden, Gannin' along the Scotswood Road..."). I think Dan expressed this opinion a while back with suitable venom ;-)

Just about the only one that can't be hijacked by the opposition is the 'N and an E and a W C ....' chant, which has me of the opinion that it's the only one worth bothering about.

Everything else, including Blaydon Races, to be brutally honest, is a doddle to be turned back on us, which makes crowd chants a bit of a waste of time IMO, nothing unique about any but the odd one.

Sorry lads, it's still a bit early in the day for me. :-{E}

I can't bear it when people sing 'there's only one Bobby Robson.' It's obvious that there are far more than just one person of such a name. It's exactly these sorts of inaccuracies that give football songs a bad name.

we've got Mirandinha, he's not from Argentina, he's from Brazil, he's f**king brill...

you can't top that

I've said this before but the Liverpool "Hey Shearer" one is an embarrassment to the Geordie nation. Sing songs about Shearer by all means but must we humiliate ourselves with rubbish of Scouse origin?

Songs like "Shall we sing a song for you" etc are just plain boring.

I hate the Liverpool slums one, too.

"Sing when you're winning, you only.....blah, blah, blah" and "....f**k all, you're ganna win f**K all...." get my goat.

Also, I'll never, ever comply with the request to "stand up if you hate Sun'lan", simply 'cos I can't be @rsed to stand up!

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

Agreed, Clarky especially re "Sun lun". I normally sit there shouting "Sit doon if you love the Toon" but it hasn't caught on..

i suppose moving the tartan rug and flask is a bind clarky mate? :-)

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

Any version of the 'Stand up' songs bores me. Though I sometimes participate if it's '...if you love the Toon'. The hating Sunderland version makes no sense unless we're actually playing them. Do other teams' supporters really care? Probably not.

The Graham Rix song will forever be one of my favorites, however. I'll never forget the wall of sound moving around Wembley as it worked it's way over to where Rik and I were sitting before catching onto what was being sung. Brilliant!

Re: Blaydon Races. I have indeed harped on at length. But it's not just the verse, they get the chorus wrong. "Oh, me lads you should have seen us gannin', gannin' along the Scotswood Road, just as they were stannin'". No! Just as who was stannin? Hmm? I'll tell you who, 'the folks along the road'. But you haven't sung that, have you? Because you keep singing bloody 'gannin along the Scotswood Road' every time you don't know a line. Bastards!

Nurse! The injections, please

I can't stand "we hate Sunlun" or "Stand up if you hate Sunlun". It's really embarrasing to have them mentioned at SJP at all.

It's particularly cringe making if these get sung during a European tie. No-one in Europe has ever heard of Sunderland so it's ludicrous for us to be broadcasting their name across the continental airwaves.

BTW its "alang the Scotswood Road". Aaareet? Champion. :-)

or how about "He's black he's broon he's playing for the toon Howard Gayle, howard Gayle" I am sure he just loved that one. One that always amused me was directed at women police "Get yer T*ts oot fer the lads. they never did mind.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

At least we don't have cringe-worthy music on the PA when we score. That is about as bad as it gets.

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2002

The Andy Cole song, and the Philips Albert were best, currently the Any O'Brien seems pleasant and enjoyable, although sadly Ben had never heard the tune before !

-- Anonymous, March 07, 2002

Sorry Pit Bill, but we hi-jacked the N and a E and a WC song long ago and it's still sung, only the "FC" bit is slightly different to yours.

It's just a bit of fun viewers.

Syme - i remember that being directed at Tony Cunningham, although funnily enough the 'he's broon, he's black, send the bastard back' reversal tended to be more relevant,

Dougal, one of the things that really hacked me off was the Arsenal fans all "singing" that Pig Bag thing they play at Boro when they score. Yes, it was very funny when they did that to Boro after they played it for their consolation at the wrong end of a 5-1 drubbing, but it wasn't us.

Right behind me is this old bag and her aging family....SAT in our Stretford End...enjoying the atmosphere WE generate yet contributing NOWT. There's one song, usually started right behind her that I didn't used to sing...it's a tad foul :-)

Anyway....last night she wound me up with another finger prod in the back....so......."altogether now.......My old man said be a City fan and I said bollox you're a cnut.......I'd rather shag a bucket with a big hole innit...than be a City fan for just one minute. With Hatchets and hammers, stanley knives and spanners, we'll show those City boys how to fight....ohhh I'd rather shag a bucket with a big hole innit...than be a City fan"

still think we should give Sting's Cushie Butterfield number a run out next time Little Keiron plays...someone start it in the Strawberry.......it'll soon catch on....
