Nikon Lens Mount Electronic Contact Mystery

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

Does anyone know why on the new AF-S and VR lenses there are 10-electronic contacts on the lens, yet only 8 on all the current SLR Bodies, Digital Included? Maybe some new lens technology is yet to be released??? ;) (06/03/2002)

Perhaps this is similar to the big Canon L series lenses, which have 11 contacts, rather than 8. The extra contacts are for Teleconverter use, allowing the Teleconverter to compute the correct aperture of the lens+TC combo, rather than just reporting the original lens aperture. All canon bodies only have 8 contacts, but TC compatible lenses have 11. When the lenses are used by themselves, they act just as normal, and the extra contacts go unused. Perhaps this is just a similar thing?
