Useless Statistics

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MATH Plus One : One Thread

This is one for you creative types. Sometimes when I'm standing at the sink, waiting for the hot water, I wonder "just how much time have I spent doing this?" The number of cycles in the average doorknob's lifespan.. The exact number of cat hairs on my bitchy feline.. stuff like that. What do YOU wonder about that really doen't matter?

People, (Y'all - I'm told) Please be original here. I want YOUR useless statistic, not something that's been done already or a link to a useless statistic page. Just how many licks does it take to get

I wonder how many steps it would take to walk from my apartment to my parent's house in Birmingham. Because, you can drive there in 2.5 hours, going 60 miles an hour. So, if I walked one mile in one hour, and counted my steps, wouldn't I be able to figure it out, using MATH?

I read somewhere that cats have 32 whiskers. I always wonder, just the face? How about the little ones on the backs of their legs? What crazy person went around and counted whiskers on cats? Why did they count whiskers on cats? HOW did they count whiskers on cats (hold still, don't bite, yowch)? Inquiring minds wanna know!

My grandmother has a theory that women live longer than men because of all the little rests we get by peeing in a seated position. Which leads me to wonder, what percentage of my life am I likely to spend seated on the porcelain throne?

Considering I have headphones on all day at work, I listen to the radio every minute I'm in my car, I wonder how many hours of my life I've listened to music.

My eardrums need to know.

Okay, here's another one, and a mini-rant thrown in for free: the average height of women in the US is 5'4". Okay. Now the mini-rant: If the average height is 5'4" and "petite" sized clothes are for women 5'4" and under why is the petites section in stores so small? If 50% of the women in this country fall into the petite category shouldn't half the store be petite sizes, not a trifling two and a half racks? Sheesh. Hey, maybe somebody should start a pet peeves thread. :)

Hey, Kay - where's the women's tall section, again?

Yeah... that's what I thought.

Kay, I'm feeling your pain, sistah. And searching out anything in petite AND over size 14 is an exercise in frustration.

Al - yeah, tall women don't get any love in clothing stores either. My rant was about petites because that's what I'm looking for. ;) I have a friend who's 6'2" and she has to scrounge for pants that fit. Why is it that men have waist/inseam and women only get petite/average/tall? Wassup with that?

I wonder how many shirts I have tried on with sleeves that have been two inches too short.

Someday, I will find something with long sleeves that doesn't have a nike swoosh on it with a pocket and a hood...someday...

I wonder how many shirts I have tried on with sleeves that have been two inches too short.

All y'all tall girls can just pretend that you are ahead of the 3/4-length sleeve trend.

You tall people can also suck it, complaining about no tall section. Where are the damn ANKLE pants, I ask you? Am I destined to go through this life with rolled-up or cut-off pants? I think you know the answer to that.

And hey. At least y'all can wear them as capris. I have to buy damn capris when I want them to hit the tops of my shoes.

Al, can you get that glass from the top shelf for me?

Here's a fun one: as many as 21% of dogs and 7% of cats snore.

-- Anonymous, March 18, 2002

If that's true, then I managed to get 2 of the 7% of cats. They both snore like they're trying to suck the room in or something.
