Fine Art

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I'm a UK based photographer (Leica)and I'm looking at the idea of moving into Fine Art photography (whatever that means...!) The USA market is a whole lot healthier than the UK one so I'm wondering does anyone on the list have any reccomendations for a Fine Art gallery whether On Line or on the Street?

Thanks

By the U.S. market being "healthier than the UK one" I assume you mean that 1 fineart print gets sold here per million photographers rather than zero? ;-)

There are numerous other fora that cater to various definitions of fineart, along with numerous "gallery" sites that have links back to the photographer's site. All are easily found with a Google search. The right site, however, requires a tighter definition of what you mean by fineart.

By healthier I mean that the 'public' are far more willing to buy photography for there home/work than here in the UK. I also believe that values are a little higher for 'unknown' photographers...

I quess it depends on what you mean by healthier. I've been exhibiting for 15 years now and have for the last 5 years had a selection of my work carried full time by a local gallery. But I sure can't afford to give up my day job - unless I wanted to use Zorki cameras ;-) All to often one hears comments like "that's a great photo - next time we're driving in the country we'll have to take a camera and try it" (at my last opening). There is still the perception out there that anyone can pick up a camera and take wonderful photos (unfortunately I blame Nikon and Canon advertising for a lot of this). At least when a viewer looks at a painting or sculpture they know they don't have canvas and paints, or marble and chisels in their closet at home.

Still would like some personal recommendations....
