Is being a manager more luck than judgement? AND doesn't it prove that attack minded signings bring success?

Perhaps Zenden and Jeffers would have been huge successes with the Toon.

Zenden was never fit because he delayed his signings and Jeffers is knacked all the time as he was at 'ton.

Steve Howey was never fit at the Toon but has been a massive success at Man City!

Personally I'm delighted we got Bellamy instead of Jeffers, and still have hopes that Robert will prove his worth. However, I have a feeling that Zenden could have been a decent signing for us.

It is a fine margin and, in truth, we don't know to what extent our interest in Zenden and Jeffers was just a smokescreen for our actual intentions.

Peter Reid tried to sign Ali Bernabia. He might have been the creative spark they needed at a relatively low cost. Likewise, they had first option on D'Alessandro for about £4 million. Fine margins in football.

Clarky, you're right about Howey although the Man City fan in this month's Mag feature on City claims he has been poorish this season, always injured, and in fact, had the game of his life against us in the Cup..

I remember being well p***ed off when Jeffers refused to even talk to YBR, I then thought I'd been kicked in the knackers when Bellers signed instead. Conversely, I always thought Zenden was a heartless little chickensh*t who'd struggle in the Premiership. But it's a good point you're making dougal, if YBR had signed his number 1 targets preseason I think we'd be struggling in mid-table.

I suppose the luckiest signing of the modern era has to be Ferguson's swoop for Cantana. At the time he was deemed to have panicked, no-one could quite figure out what he was thinking of, and if he's honest with himself, I'm sure he'd admit he never thought Cantana would turn out to be such an inspiration to a goodish but massively underachieving side.

Zenden thought we weren't a big enough club for him. Who's more likely to be in the Champions League next season?!

Just goes to show big names aren't always the best for us.

Winston Bogarde is the one that always amuses me - amidst the defensive injury crisis last season, he could have done a job for us. But no, he went to Chelsea and must have started about 5 games in two season.

Winston Bogarde....interesting name. It rivals ex-mackem Barry Wardrobe for daftness.

Dougal,

Wished we had bought Winston Bogarde the name conjures up so much???
